considering AMD said their goal was to push low level API forward, and get other API's on board, I would say they have succeeded and can move on. Making an API doesn't make money, and software is not AMD's bread and butter. It's not like Oculus, where everyone and their brother comes out with VR headset, and now Oculus has to compete. With Mantle, it was always an effort to push technology, there was never a financial motivator (directly) for making Mantle, just an incentive to help DX and OpenGL to get rid of cpu overhead, and show them how to do it.
