Oculus rift no more? HTC Vive could be the way...

HTC and Valve have just shown off the HTC Vive at MWC 2015

So what's the big news?

  1. Valve partnership (not facebook!)
  2. Working with partners which can use VR where it matters (gaming, tv, education etc)
  3. 90HZ refresh rate
  4. High audio fidelity
  5. Extremely light
  6. Full motion tracking
  7. Hand tracking (want more info on this!)
  8. Wireless controllers
  9. And straight out with a release date! End of year 2015 (will probably be out way before Oculus rift)

 

In comparison from the Oculus Rift:

  1. Greatly increased speed of software and hardware development
  2. No long drawn out drip fed developer kits with what I consider pathetic technical enhancements a 5 year old could have made a decision to include (see DK1, DK2, DK3, Crystal cove etc DK1 should have been Crystal Cove)
  3. No making or bragging about simplistic technical enhancements and treat it like man just landed on the moon for the first time
  4. Not hiding the fact that they used mobile screens which they knew wouldn't be used in the release version to make a bit more cash on another developer kit version (should have just said here is the samsung gear prototype)
  5. Who really cares that they have M Karmak as a developer, his time went many years ago
  6. No stabbing the community in the back

 

A lot more information is required but I may have a new VR headset I can support, other than Oculus (for some reason I just don't like seeing those guys constantly doing their PR bull) and Morpheous which I don't hold much hope for as I am not a console gamer.

I don't care who makes one I just want one that is relatively cheap reliable and will run with every game/ program I have.

I think that Oculus just had its arse handed to it on a silver platter. 

 

Now what I am excited about now is what will Oculus do about this as HTC Doing this will spur on development on both sides :) This is why competition is awesome.

I'll let VR headsets sit around for a month or two before deciding on one to buy, that way people can review them and I find find which gives the most immersive experience.

They had a lot of their money in Facebook bonds / stock or something and were bought out by facebook for a fraction of the cost that they paid for snapchat (which is sickening)...

Facebook say they will leave them to it and we will get the device we all expect and want but at some point facebook is going to want something, and I fear that something, there will be consequences...

 

HTC and Valve have enough money to do just as well so, come on HTC & Value, GO GO GO!!! lol ;)

The point is, I want VR and I want it now. It's my next investment and Oculus is too damn slow.

They got funding from kickstarter, and they've had funding from Facebook for over a year, it's going too slow, face it! In this day and age it is unacceptable!

Oh really, it is just a revision each year with cars? If you wanna blunt things to that level, what is Oculus doing? Strapping two screens together with a high refresh rate? Making sure they overlap so it emulates human vision... They are not inventing anything from the ground up. I'm not saying anyone can do it, but saying it's some super advanced tech is bullshit! :P

 

Doesn't matter anyway, now that Valve is involved there is going to be good money backing this product. Valve will ensure good support for games and they are the ones that can actually make such a push happen.

No, actually it's because no one was interested. Microsoft released a tablet back in 2001, was it? No one cared... Even in 2007 Nokia released a tablet like device, no one cared... Now that the market is ready for it, we can go for it.

Also, now we have the consumers begging for it, there is a huge market to be taken, you consumer grade gaming PC can handle the two high res screens. The first one there will grab all the application and game support first and the first one there will grab most of the sales... Enjoy! :)

And with this it comes with even more need for a good rig to run at 90fps, unless as they said on Utopia, "In other words, it wont make you sick" means it won't make you sick on any fps.

 

I also hope the price isn't over 300 for consumer model, max.
