770 vs 960 help!

Go to solution Solved by SeanBond,

Yeah the 770 would be faster and cheaper, it's a no brainer.

Hey guys so after selling my gtx 660 a few months back , I've been planning on picking something else up.. just for reference like most people I like to game at max everything at 1080p at just a playable framerate, i dont really care if I'm getting a solid 60fps etc. at any rate I've narrowed it down to two cards. the gtx 770 vs gtx 960 . Most critics and consumers are disappointed that the 960 didn't out right beat out the 770 just like the 970 beat out the 780. so thats why this is even worth comparing but basically I've found  a used but in excellent condition reference gtx 770 for $175usd and on the other hand i could buy a brand new 960 around $200 or $205 .. please give your input! I've checked out so many benchmarks I believe the general conclusion is that the 770 is slightly more powerful but again to me it seems very close in a handful of cases the gtx 960 matches or beats it in terms of fps. again it's so close!

so which is it the gtx 770 at $175   or     or the gtx 960 at $205

please state your answer and some solid reasons! realistically can't really go wrong with ether but i want the better performing card!

update* just a thought to answer some of the replies i've received so far. I know AMD has some great options for 1080p gaming that fit my budget but i personally am a fan of what nvidia has been doing with geforce experience etc. and also its worth noting that the gtx 770 is used and a reference card. he claims he never overclocked the card . and last thing! i've come across a handful of benchmarks in which the 960 does match/ beat the 770.. by only a few fps but yes across the board the 770 has performed better! keep the feedback coming! thanks

update! ended up getting the 770 i threw it in today, for 175 bucks im really happen with some benchmarks ive been running!! and i love the reference design although he did give it to me with a lot of dust even within the window in the heatsink fins, but i did partially clean it out! anyway just goes to show to keep an eye on craigslist!!

The 960 is barely faster than a 760 and a tid slower than a 770. Get the 770.

Guys, he's not asking for AMD suggestions. He's asking for a suggestion of whether to get the 960 or the 770.

We're suggesting OP a better card for the money. They haven't even replied back yet so you don't know their intentions

1200mhz is actually sorta average for the 780ti, a really nice oc is 1250. I remember linus' 780ti was a 1300mhz beast. But none of his 780ti's actually had an OC as low as mine out of like 4? I haven't looked at the overclocking dock in a while but this is why I think the 980 is incredibly over rated, 780ti is amazing at OC. My stock clock is 863 and I hit 1200 without voltage bumps.

Either 770, or save up a bit if you can and go AMD high end.

I'm seriously looking at replacing my 970 with an 8gb edition of the R9 290x.

I like how the difference between "average" and "really nice" is 50mhz, with only another 50mhz to "beast" status :P

isn't that card near the $500 range? depending on what resolution you game at I don't see why that would be worth it, for sure though 8gb ram sounds overkill and awesome but personally i love what nvidia has been doing with geforce experience etc. shadow play is also really cool

Damn a gtx 770 for 175$? Get that.

yup off craigslist locally, keep in mind its a used card and he says he never overclocked it but of course no big deal even if he did. i think its a decent price I've seen them as low as $120 locally for a galaxy 2gb 770 but that deal went quick

Two words :Modded Skyrim.

The 970 is lacking in this area, I've been able to almost max out the "4gb" Vram on 1080 at 60hz with modded skyrim.

The difference in overclockablilty on the same core isn't that massive. Average to me is 1200 because I don't really know of anyone who is unable to hit that other than maybe 1 or 2 cases but then again there has only been 1 or 2 known cases for me that have hit 1300.

I have a friend who runs at like 1450 with his 780Ti Reference.

I can't say I would believe that without proof. It's much more likely to get a 5ghz 4770k.

So when you pay about £50 more for a card that's been more aggressively binned, these are the kinds of numbers we're talking about? An extra 50-100Mhz? That must be worth... almost a whole fps...

770 is a stronger card...R9 280X is even stronger i suggest you look for one of these instead unless you have a shield or something...

which is why I would never get a card that cost more for the chance of higher overclocks. I am on a reference card, most kingpin versions hit 1300+ but they cost like 30% more or something ridiculous. Just so they can have 2 or 3 more frame per second.

R9 280.

^ R9 280/X.

i dont really see how the 280x would be a better deal than a $175 gtx 770

check out benchmarks on mulitple websites!! the benefit with going with the 280x would be the vram but than again id be paying a little more for it..
