Weapon skins in CS:GO

I'm very new to CS:GO and was wondering how exactly you can earn weapon skins.

I don't play the game, but I thought it was like you buy keys, to unlock cases in which you can get weapons/skins

you can buy them or you randomly get crap skins when playing

 You can earn by playing matches, awards from missions, trading, buying them off of the Steam market, or cases (Ughhh)...

its not worth it to buy keys and open cases because for the money you spend on the key you can probably buy the skin

Iv'e gotten 2$ skins from drops before

There's a few ways to get them. The only way to get them for free is to hope you get a drop at the end of a game. Not all games will actually drop items, and the ones that do don't give them to everyone. You can also get only a few drops per week, although I can't remember the actual number. The items that can drop are cases, sticker capsules and weapon skins, but the weapon skins usually aren't very good and are worth nothing on the market. Competitive drops are the most common, but they also take a lot longer than any other game type.

 

Another way is to get them by completing missions during an operation. Although you have to pay to get access to the operation missions, and operations usually only run twice a year for a few months. The skins you get from this are also usually kinda crappy too. I think the most valuable one I've had was worth like £2.50, and I've completed probably about 60 missions in total.

 

The other two ways cost money to get them. You can buy them straight off the community market, which I would suggest inspecting anything you want to buy in-game first. Since decent skins are usually pretty expensive for what they are, and it's best to make sure that you're paying for something you actually want. The other way is to buy keys for cases (which can be obtained through drops or by buying them in the community market) and unlock them. This will give you a 'random' weapon skin from the ones listed in the case. The chances of you getting anything decent from this is very slim though. You could get something amazing on your first key (£1.60), or you could spend £500 and still get fuck all. The second one is more likely though.

 

If you really want cool skins, then your best option is the community market.

probably because you had a mission pass and you did some missions that got you those weapon drops.

Seriously though, if you're smart, you can turn a random 7 cent drop into 3 dollars in a matter of 2 weeks. Just be sure to not lose it all.
