Hello Linus..

I have a question that would be great if someone over there would be good enough to explain this to me?

My question is:

Why the hell are excellent game titles like 'The Last of Us' for instance, banned from being

released on PC? It is my understanding that such games are written and programmed on a PC

to begin with? Assuming this is correct, you would think it would be easy to adapt and release

The Last of Us for PC? It would seem that such a move would not only make more money for

the companies that created the game as well as bolster more brownie points for Sony?

Can you please explain the ins and outs of why such great titles are held back from PC release?

I have seen a few efforts of emulating The Last of Us for PC, but I have yet to come across

one that actually plays correctly.

Many thanks if you can clear this up?

Max S

6 years more likely , we can already emulate some indie games .

There's a huge difference between an indie game and a game which full utilises the CELL architecture,  I'm hoping that this will be done in 6 years but I have my doubts. Sony might go sue their asses once they start to get closer.

Considering both consoles run on PC based hardware and its been more than a year since release I highly doubt emulators are coming anytime soon.

The PS3's CPU is quite different compared to what we traditionally find in a PC.

Games are literally kept from pc release because as we all know PC gaming is the best way to go graphically in every aspect. Sonypays companies who manufacture games to produce them solely for consoles that way people buy ps4's just in order to play these "exclusive" games.

I'm talking about the current gen hardware (Xbone and PS4)

I cannot deny your comment then. But Naughty Dog is more than capable of developing on PC - they're just getting contracted to make games exclusively for Sony.(I don't think they've made any games for other consoles)

? I was talking about the fact emulation should of been possible by now.

I know. The second part of my comment was an in-general statement.

There really is no reason except for the whole "let's make the most money" attitude.

Say for example a developer has a great idea for a game and begins to work on it and brings it over to Microsoft. Microsoft likes it a lot and wants to build a game franchise. Microsoft wants to increase Xbox 1 sales, so they pay the developer a lot of money to make the game exclusive to the Xbox 1. Why? Well, if you sell a good game, Microsoft makes around $50; however, if you make a good game that's only playable if you buy a $400 console, Microsoft makes $450 and will most likely make more because people generally buy many games for their consoles.

TL;DR: Creating console exclusives creates an incentive to buy consoles. The game publishers decide if a certain game is exclusive or not, not the game developers.

once someone cracks either consoles source code we will get decent enough emulators. its only a matter of time before it happens.

Last of Us is from a home grown Sony studio. It is "first party". Those games do not come to PC because it is literally all the console has as far as "value". Last Of Us is not on PC for the same reason Mario/Zelda is not on the PC. These companies may even be taking a loss to advertise the "crown jewel" exclusives, "grease" journalists to pimp and promote it (you see months of coverage of one game like this often on sites like IGN), and create the "crown jewel game" like Uncharted, Last of Us. The advertising money that will be spent on Halo 5 is going to be astronomical.

Games like H1Z1, Planetside 2, Everquest Next are also Sony first party games, but PC Gamers are not going to buy a console to play an inferior multiplayer/fps port.

Now third party game exclusives like Rise of the Tomb Raider? That is just MS being total a-holes and nothing new from them. They paid a dev to keep or delay a game off PC and PS4 that was previously announced as a PC game. Third Party exclusivity should be trashed by all forms of media and is simply horrible for gaming. It should simply not exist, and should not be supported in any form. Sony also did the same with Bloodborne which is just as bad (but at least we did not have a trailer like Rise of the Tomb Raider that announced it as a PC game). Both titles should be TRASHED from the media for being third party exclusives. No one should buy these games when they are new imo, and buying the console and that game just encourages this BS.

Now as far as emulation? Next Gen consoles will be emulated (emulated might not be the right word since they are x86) before last gen consoles (with the exception of Power PC based Wii U), IF they are jailbroken in the next few years. It is not really a question of hardware as much as it was in the past since they are now x86 PC's (though you may initially need a GCN architecture GPU). The consoles simply need cracked.

PS3/Xbox 360? Much harder. Highly customized Power PC architecture and emulation is not 1 to 1. Wii U? Even more powerful and also Power PC based. They are working on a PS3 emulator but as far as it actually playing games well any time soon? Probably not. If it can, it will not be on a low end PC as far as CPU.

You are always going to have first party exclusives to consoles. No one says you can't get a console to go with a PC. No one also said you have to buy that console when it is new and doesn't even have first party games worth a darn either. :)

A PS4 at 250 bucks with Uncharted next Christmas will make a whole lot more sense than current price for nothing. Buy Bloodborne for 5 bucks used when you buy the PS4...

Pirating games on console is pretty common.

Each time I see a release on a torrent board for Xbox or PS, thousands of downloads have been done, as for any PC release.

These games aren't on PC because Sony need them to sell consoles.

Xbox One doesn't really exist (the concept of the Xbox one), therefore, the only "fight" that Sony and Microsoft have, is on exclusives titles.

Both consoles are close in terms of performance/graphics, they're likely the same; so to sell them, manufacturers have to play on those kind of games.

Sony pays Naughty Dog to only develop their game for their console. It's business, Sony wants exclusive titles to sell more consoles.

Platform exclusivity needs to go away, I can't play a game like Uncharted on the PS3 due to it being locked to 30fps (that is, until I can emulate it). If it was on PC, I'd play it in >= 60 fps with a mouse and keyboard. Damn Sony.
