Dual Socket 2011 workstation on a budget

VictorB

I always have liked dual socket systems. I have owned a Dual Athlon xp 2400+ in 2002/2006 + many other systems and server with 2 cpu's. But nowadays they are way to expensive. But friends of my had some overstock in parts. So I had the chance to build the parts for a good low price.

So here is my Dual Socket 2011 buildlog on a budget!

let's turn this server in a workstation!

I do lot's of video editing so I really can use some power. The Motherboard is from 2012 and the CPU's are Ivy bridge from Q3 2013. The nice thing about this board is 4x PCI-e 16x and the power supply supports 4 video cards. So it can be build as a workstation what I gonna do. The thing this system's lack over a workstation board is USB 3.0 and Sound. So I gonna add a good video card, USB 3.0, Sound and my ssd + 4x harddrive in raid10. I can configure the fans from Silent to Tornado so i can make it really silent. My current system is a I7 3770k.

Specs:

Intel Extreme Server board S2600COEIOC

Intel P4000M case

2x Xeon E5-2640 V2

64gb ddr3 ecc

From my current system will be used:

GTX570

Samsung 840 pro 256gb

4x1tb seagate in raid10

I will post and explains the challenges and my solution in the buildlog.

Please enjoy watching and feel free to ask questions. I gonna make also video's about the system.

My first thought when I read the title was "2011? Dual Socket? Workstation? Budget? HA GOOD LUCK WITH THAT"

Either way. I dual socket build for gaming/working would be badass. Especially with those PSUs.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

There's no such thing as a budget build when you go with dual socket

Looking forward into this :)

This is a beauty.  Sweet cable management, I always have wanted to have a baller dual CPU machine; but I don't think ASUS made a dual socket Mobo for 1150 this generation.

I saw budget dual socket and was about to get my BS alarm but was pleasantly surprised.

I'm keen to watch this and Barnacules machine, I think i'd like a dual socket PC, cos.

I hope Barnacules didn't pay for those cpus. 2 intel xeons that are dual cpu capable cost as much as 5 xeons that are only single cpu capable, for basically the same chip otherwise (slightly more cache)

Youtube is his job now. I'd be suprises if it's not all tax deductible but, I don't know how that works in the US. In Aust it's almost better to run your business at loss for taxation purposes... But... We don't talk about that :P

Jesus those fans sound like they're about to make the whole thing fly away

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

The 2 middle fans in the middle have tornado mode. But i can tweak the whole sound level in the system system console. The top fan is made to cool both cpu's passive if I installed the cooling shroud.

An update!

Nothing special happened. Still waiting on the gpu power cables which I ordered 1 month ago :|

The unboxing video of the Noctua coolers is online!

But here some pictures :)

256gb Samsung 850 pro ssd as boot drive

11046605_821939177842511_675638844030710

Don't know where to mount the ssd yet.

11051755_821939591175803_876693092974190

I spray painted a 25 year old beige 3.5 inch to 5.25 converter for my ordered front usb 3.0 panel.

10380024_821939714509124_716086227561183

I bought an used geforce 660ti with 1344 cuda cores.

10830687_821939621175800_910772562439214

The 660ti supports 4 monitors.

10857287_821939727842456_323014573456291

They send me the wrong USB 3.0 controller! I ordered one with a internel 20pin usb 3.0 header. So they send the correct part again. And I dont have to send this one back.

10847491_821939561175806_415790891960503

I got this second Intel server for free. It has a Xeon version of the Q6600 2.4 quadcore 8gb ddr2 and it came with 4x 500gb. It is the same brand/style case.
