Microsoft trademarks "Windows 365"

It was found that Microsoft recently trademarks 'Windows 365' report Neowin, suggesting that Microsoft will have a subscription based offering of its Windows OS, much like Office.

win365.jpg

However, there doesn't seams to have any indication that Microsoft will have this model any time soon. It could also be Microsoft registering the name to avoid someone else in taking it.

As of right now, it does not seem like Microsoft is planning to release 'Windows 365' in the immediate future, as they are pushing Windows 10 at every possible instance. For now, know that Microsoft has claimed this branding right, but as for what they will do with it, only time will tell.

The pricing strategy of Windows 10 is not yet known, so it is hard to know anything. But it is believed that Windows 365 subscription is for those who want to buy the retail copy of Windows and are interested in paying per year and get the latest version of the OS as they come out, and Small Businesses who doesn't fit in the volume license department, but can't afford retail box for every of it's computers.

I think this will be great for small business and even home offices where it makes more sense to sub than it does to pay for new licenses on a yearly/two year basis.

I'd pay for my OS through a subscription too IF I had the option to cancel my subscription and simply stay on that version and never get updates to the "next big revision" without paying again, or something.

If microsoft wants people to actually buy their OS, they better not make it a subscription based thing.

If the price is sensible I could get behind it, but I think doing what Apple does would be the more sensible route to take.

it doesnt really work that way.

apple doesnt need to register the name iphone7 so a chinese kid doesnt "take" the name..you cannot do that, this is so once you have a product it has a proper trademark and registered name that is recognized

How would they take the os away from you if you canceled the sub!?

If it'll actually be a subscription:

Worst case scenario, it works like a pay-to-play MMO (unlikely).

Best case scenario, you'll just get messages about not having a genuine copy of Windows/some similar message or even a lockdown of certain Windows features until you renew the subscription.

It's funny because people probably have no plans of naming something, "Windows 365," unless it's them.

I would be more than happy to pay $10-$20 per year for Windows as opposed to buying the new version.

So far Windows 7 has cost me about £1.60 per month. I bought a licence with a one-off payment in 2012. As of right now if you take the price I paid for this OS and spread it monthly, that's what it comes to. And obviously that figure decreases with every passing month.

The way I see it, that's what a subscription will have to beat for me to even consider it. And it isn't going to. Just being realistic, a subscription is never going to be better value for the vast majority of people than a high, one off payment. This is buy-now-pay-later logic at its finest.

On the other hand, that works out as about £20 per year so, I don't know maybe it is reasonable for them to beat that.

why are people getting so upset? its not like if MS does this, subscription will be your only option. They aren't that stupid, all they are doing is giving you more options. which is good

I get the impression is more of a new name for Office 365 but with more Windows/Microsoft related content (One Drive being a good inclusion).

I can only dream with these examples but perhaps it includes 365 Days of Xbox LIVE since I very much think the Gold account type will be on Windows 10 in some form (premium features, more cloud storage etc). Perhaps Microsoft Expression 5 is coming but that is doubtful :(

all they want is to ADD a new way to pay for it, like office. you can buy it our right or buy sub with free upgrades. It looks like to me people don't like options in this forums.

A subscription service which includes Windows, Office, OneDrive etc would be okay if it was like $50/year. anything more than that and I would just go back to buying it from some ocean privateers if you know what I'm saying.

Office365 and 1TB of OneDrive storage is $10 per month though. so I don't think it would go as low as $50/year
