I'd get a better case than that if you're putting $1500 worth of GPUs in there

Also, why 3 980s?

CPU: R5 5800X3D Motherboard - MSI X570 Gaming Plus RAM - 32GB Corsair DDR4 GPU - XFX 7900 XTX 4GB Case - NZXT H5 Flow (White) Storage - 2X 4TB Samsung 990 Pro PSU - Corsair RM100E Cooling - Corsair H100i Elite Capellix Keyboard Corsair K70 (Brown Switches)  Mouse - Corsair Nightsword RGB

Look for a workstation board or high-end gaming one, ASUS has a Z97 workstation one which may fit the bill.

No z97 supports triple sli, only a few selected does with the plx chip. The other will be to get x99 for triple sli.

This. SLI requires at least x8 for each card, and 1150 chips only have 16 lanes off the CPU.

If you go X99 be sure to check the motherboard manual carefully if you go with the 5820K, some boards don't split the lanes such that tri-SLI is doable.

Socket 1150 only has 16 PCIe lanes on the CPU, max is 2-way SLI. Some Z97 board supports 3 to 4-way SLI with the help of a additonal PLX Chip that provides an additional 16 more PCie lanes. Most X99 at least supports 3-way SLI even with a 5820K. Can you provide a board that can't do triple SLI even when it's X99. MicroATX boards don't count, due to its size.

The ASRock X99 Extreme3. The bottom slot is 2.0 x4.

Edit: Extreme4 as well.

Edit 2: Asus X99-A also

Edit 3: This is with the 5820K, except the Extreme3. The bottom slot is pulling from the chipset so it can't do tri-SLI period.

Extreme 3 can't support 3-way SLI or CFX not matter what CPU is used, and it only has 4 ram slots instead of 8. The rest is just, you get what you pay for. MSI is generous,it lets 5820K run 3-way SLI with the X99S SLI Plus and it's cheap too at sub $200.

That board is around $300, while the rest are like $200ish

When going X99 you don't cheap out. Go Z97 if you can't afford to play with the big boys

This exact reason, you REQUIRE a x99 chipset and either the 5960x, 5930K or 5820k for the pcie lanes.

You'll need a minimum of a 5820K to support what you want. That will require a socket LGA2011-v3 (X99) motherboard.

That will let you run the 3 cards in PCI-E X8 mode with an PCI-E X4 card (your network). On a Z97 board, you'll see very little benefit in the tri-sli, with the X4 speeds.

If its a gaming PC that you want an audio card, etc...in as well, then you're going to need an X99 with PLX.

If you have the money you can go something like an X99-WS with dual PLX PEX Chips with a 5960X and get 64 PCI-E lanes.

As stated several times in the thread u need a x99 mobo to run 3 way sli. END OF STORY.

An nzxt s340 case? yes that will 'physically' fit into the case.

See i couldnt justify the cost for this. If video editing/rendering is your concern then it would be cheaper to make a whole other computer (FX8350) and render the video remotely

NO YOU DON'T. That's what PLX chips are for. x8/x8/x16 END OF STORY.

You can even do 4 way sli with a plx chip.

Soo i have never heard of PLX chips b4 but after some research i found this anandtech article which describes how it works.

Since gpu's dont max out a 8x slot you can probably get away with using a board with PLX.

it 'may' have a negative performance impact in the 'future' when new cards that are more bandwidth hungry come out.
