Fire drill means fired...

The weather outside was cold and it was during the beginning of my work shift. A man on the speaker box said "we will be conducting a fire drill in 5 minutes." 5 minutes passed and the alarm went off. All employees went outside and waited to be called back in. The man on the speaker box came back on and said "This is not a drill." "We are letting people go" he said. "If your employee badge still works then you are not fired" he said. I looked around and thought you have to be joking right. What kind of place does this? I frantically looked around to see if it was a joke. This was not a joke. I waited in line to swipe my badge as security made sure people did not get in  that were no longer with the company. I waited for what felt like an eternity. I was next in line and I knew this job was one of the higher paying jobs out there. I swiped my badge and the light turned green. I did not get fired but I felt bad for my co-workers. Just another day at the office.

 

This is not my story. The is a true story. Happened to one of my friends. It happened a long time ago. The company name will not be disclosed.

Wow..... I don't know what to say. Kind of a hiliarious way to do it, besides the fact that they just fired a bunch of people. Did they get any kind of severance pay? Or was it just "Sorry but you are no longer part of this company go find another job!"

Is it bad that my dream setup only costs a few thousand not counting the obutto?

I guess if I'm at work and they say that there's going to be a fire drill, I'll hide under the desk until I smell smoke.

I am not sure what happened to the other employees. My friend still kept her job but I have not talked to her in a while.
