Will the GTX 970 coil whine?

KezzaMcFezza

I have been thinking about upgrading from my GTX 650 Ti to a GTX 970 but alot of people say it coil whines like a b*tch. And my 650 Ti recently started whining and it sounds horrible, so is there a specific 970 that doesn't whine? or does it even whine at all?. Or should i just get a GTX 760. I'd like to hear everyone's response :).

It's possible. But nobody can tell you for sure, the 970 tends to whine more than any other card I know of but not all of them will.

It depends. Some cards (Even the exact same model) react better or worse to certain power supplies. I have a RM 1000 and 2 970 STRIX and I don't have any coil wine.

My brother had an Asus Strix 970 which whined like a bitch. He returned it and got a second one that was even worse. He ended up getting some sort of special edition card based on the 980 board and with a reference cooler that appears to be silent.

Just like the silicon lottery, you may get a card that has whine, be it loud or soft, or you may be one of the lucky ones and not get any at all.
