When was the last time you were impressed by a GPU ?

Guest Generallee

And i dont mean "OMG 1000GIGABYTES OF VRAM" impressed, i mean "Jesus christ what is this anti aliasing wizardry ?!" impressed

My first GPU ever was a Rendition Verité V2200, PCI, 8MB of ram (u wot 980 ?), the performance was not bad but driver support was a nightmare

But it was special, 3D only GPU's were on their first steps and basically everything was an innovation, 1600x1200 was the 4K (and you could actually notice that) and running GLQuake with a Geforce 4 + Voodoo 2  setup was only possible in my imagination. I remember you had to use a 2D card coupled with a 3D card and use some black magic nonsense to make it work, that was before both 2D and 3D acceleration were implemented on a single chip

I still have shivers when i look at this and i'm sure some of you will feel the same

voodoo-5-5500agp.jpg

2164%20-%206000%20lolz%20quad%20sli%20vo

> The almighty, never released, Voodoo 5 6000 in all it's quad SLI glory

Correct me if i'm wrong, or maybe I just feel way too nostalgic but I feel like nowadays GPU makers don't try to innovate that much, i mean all we get every year is faster clock speeds and more/faster ram and the usual efficiency progress, but that's it "mainly", nothing really new, it's just a race to the lowest temps and highest benchmark scores just to claim that this or that GPU is the fastest one

What do you think ?

I'd say the 750/750ti. That power consumption is something else. I don't even...

My first discreet GPU was an ATI Rage 128 Ultra. I LOVED that thing. I still even have it in an old pentium pro machine.

I'd say HD7970. Just due to the fact that its still a beast @ 1080p after more than 3 years (under a different name).

The radeon 7770. Performance of a 6850/70 for like $120 with like 100W of consumption at load. It was pretty spectacular when I bought 2.5 years ago

I have the same card still using it now, fantastic value for money.

My old GeForce 4 mx440! :D But jaw dropping, I'd have to say the first DX 11 GPUs, when Nvidia started showcasing the GTX 480 and tesselation! :D

HD7750.

I then got used to getting >10fps in anything upgrading from my old laptop's Intel GMA and nothing has really impressed me since.

Always loved the 3dfx box art. My favourite is the Voodoo3 3500. Just really liked the colors.

Now that was something ! But then it have been ruined by the Fermi architecture and its surface of the sun load temps

HD4870 / HD4870 x2 / HD4890 - these things were the bomb back in their days.

Also the latest maxwell gpus. Performance increase is nothing spectacular but its performance/watt ratio is impressive.

Yeah it is. 3dfx called it Scan Line Interleave. Very similar to Nvidia's SLI, when it comes down to it.

Anyways, I was impressed by my 480 with it's performance and how it actually runs cooler than my 7950 at a lower fan speed (albeit a tad bit louder).

Yep.

And NVidia Acquired 3DFX when they went bankrupt.

Yeah, it was originally Voodoo SLI

The upgrade from a GTX 770 to a GTX 780. I didn't realize it'd be as big of a jump as it turned out to be.

I never imagined owning a Titan but I got the next best thing lol.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
