Nintendo to halt console and software distribution in Brazil

Nintendo will end its distribution of hardware and software in Brazil due to high import tariffs. The company opted not to create a local manufacturing operation to avoid the import fees in the emerging market.

"Starting in January 2015, Gaming do Brasil, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Juegos de Video Latinoamérica, GmbH, will no longer distribute Nintendo products in Brazil," Nintendo stated to Game Informer. "Despite the changes in Brazil, Juegos de Video Latinoamérica will continue to be Nintendo's distributor for Latin America and they remain committed to the brand and the region."

Oh noes, it might just be better for everyone. Brazil has a insanely high import tax and stuff. Which made a PS4 be 1.8k down there

They made the import rates mostly so the businesses there could grow.

Mostly the car bussines.

This made (makes) cars there that are not made by Brazilian factories, extremely expensive (and thus rarer).

It's sad to see this :(

Nintendo, among the big three, has the worst distribution line worldwide. Probably doesn't help them sell their console when they don't sell it to a boatload of countries in the first place.

This is a problem with protectionism. Despite its well intention goals it can lead to all sorts of problems and possibly create an economy that is worse off.

So I know nothing about the situation in Brazil,

But they could have put exceptions. They could have put a high import tax on cars or vehicles only, specifically.

I think they didn't because the government is desperate for some cash, and doesn't want to execute some austerity measures by cutting services it can't afford, at least that is what it sounds like to me.

I heard it on some car show on Discovery Channel.

They did that because the businesses there couldn't grow, because stuff from Asia and such was cheaper.

To put it in perspective: a PS4 in the US is 400 (US) dollars. Converted to US Dollars, a PS4 in Brazil is 1600 dollars.

I don't know how expensive other stuff (food and drinks, but also other electronics), but that sounds ridiculous..

They could but the idea is that this should impulse investment from foreign companies into the country. The same concept applies here in Mexico (30% import tax on most electronics) except 1) They haven't been so overzealous with the taxing scheme.....yet and 2) There is the fact that we're next door neighbors with the US so logistically it makes more sense to mass produce or import/export things to/from here than all the way to Brazil. 3) This is more of a distant third since this is mostly ignored but we do have NAFTA and it's supposed to smooth out investments and such so it should work better.

In any case maybe this is a good opportunity for Brazilian folk to delve even more heavily into PC gaming? The crazy import taxes are still there but there's a lot more flexibility in PC gaming to help with that

The government is desperate for money, yes. But for keeping it theirselves. Won't go deeper than that...

Anyway, I started pirating alot of single player games because some of them reach 100+ dollars. Back when I was a kid and had my Wii, buying a non-pirated game was an investment of some sort. I bought something like 6 maybe in about 5 years, and those were the ones I really had to have (Zelda etc). And as Nintendo's popularity here was decreasing by the arrival of PS3 and Xbox 360 (both made here, with an okay local support service and stuff), no one really wanted to buy those games. I was surprised it took this long for Nintendo to completely get out, because they really couldn't reach the consumer, it was always a very bad service. That, though, is probably going to raise even more the price of their games here, because companies that import them will surely see this as an advantage. So for those who have a Wii U in here, well, they're kinda fucked really :/

The problem comes when the population request a great number of services which the country/province/state can't offered, and to win political vote for elections implements. Then again, it is a human thing to not understand... no money. Of course it doesn't stop there... we have corruption, miss management of funds and services, etc... I am from Quebec, I know all about it.

This is how we pay taxes: take a brown envelope, put all your money in that you made in the year, keep 20$, and send it.

Our sales tax is above the federal tax (over 15% total), we have "eco" tax (which is before all taxes, and sold products), we have 3 taxes on fuel making fuel, income tax is super duper high, we have school tax, welcome tax (nice name), and public transport is expensive and service is no good, we are resource rich province, which brings massive amount if money, and we beg Canada for money than any other provinces by significant margins (Federal gov is supposed to split profits it makes for each provinces, but we beg for more), and we are running deficit so bad, there it a Debt clock on the province: http://www.iedm.org/27-quebec-debt-clock

Good luck understanding.

And I assume your "elected officials" make a huge salary. Ahhh the "benefits" of socialism.
