after gutting it, i took a while to ponder how i was going to add the motherboard standoffs, because the original ones were in non-standard positions. i ended up deciding to drill through the side panel and use a bolt and nuts.

This looks like fun!

yes, it was rather enjoyable. the only no-fun parts were all the issues i didn't see coming when actually building in the case. i'll explain in the next update.

Could tell, so much proprietary design goes into everything Apple makes. But it's the balls and patience to get past it that counts :D

Do i see a hackintosh?!

no. IMO a hackintosh is not worth it, at least for this build. i would rather keep my windows machine. if i need OSX i can use my mom's iMac. maybe someday though...

I love it, but I'm going to be completely honest. That dust bunched up in the bottom of the case made me gag.

PART 2!!!

post-103118-0-38358600-1420257577_thumb.

So this is a pic of the system with everything installed and working. I will explain the snags along with pictures below.

Ok, so the first hitch in my master plan was that my dummy mobo and my main mobo had very slightly different i/o positions, with the main mobo being slightly lower than the dummy. This was a problem because the audio jacks on the dummy just barely fit inside the bottom edge of the i/o shield area. I ended up having to grind down the edge of the area to make it fit.

post-103118-0-66853000-1420258068_thumb.

The next issue was with my sata power cables from my psu. They are all right angle connectors. Because of this i had to ghetto-mount my hard drive back behind the fan/cable management bracket instead of on the mounts on the bottom of the case.

post-103118-0-79787000-1420258238_thumb.

The last issue was with my power supply and the power supply mount at the back of the case. Unfortunately, to mount my psu in the psu mount, I would have to have the fan facing the back side of the case, suffocating the psu. So what I did was take the back end of an old psu i had lying around and took the power jack from the old psu, and an lid power cable i had, and put them together to make a pass through cable. I made it extra long in case i decide to mount the psu elsewhere. This also means that the psu isn't screwed in. So I took som rubber feet off an old tv and put them beneath and on the back side to prevent it from slipping around. The way the lock on the top of the case is positioned, the psu cant actually go anywhere, so it will be fine for now.

post-103118-0-36624900-1420258396_thumb.

So that's all the problems that occurred during this build, now for some shots of the case in its full glory.

Thanks man! I plan to eventually get a 5.25" bay thingy for for front panel audio and usb, but I'm happy with it for now. It's also WAY quieter than my old case. Like, Way quieter.

Wish that my old iMac G5 could have been cannibalized to do something like this...

Did the old thing use an ATX motherboard? If so, wouldn't it be fairly straightforward to do this? Just curious.

It was about the same size as an atx board, but I had to install all-new standoffs because it used a completely custom layout.

A custom motherboard made specifically for apple. This thing was a 300Mhz powerhouse from 1998. ;)
