Lol. That's a laugh and a half. Our Google ad revenue was like $10-15k last year for this site. Trivial numbers when you factor in the time and cost associated with running it.

We do it because it's yet another way we can engage with our community.

Well I know the forum is one of the primary reasons I stay with LTT with my main source of tech news. You probably make up the cost with people that stay with your videos because of the forum.

Watching videos and being able to talk to a community is awesome. and even when they take off, still being able to communicate with the man behind it, reminds me of a chance when i got to 1 on 1 pm with notch in the early days of minecraft, thats crazy to think about now. that level of communication is rare in other channels and places.

You could set up a crowd funding campaign to pay for a professional youtube account consultant LOL

I honestly think I'm one of the FEW people on the planet who could legitimately consult and help almost anyone start a successful YouTube channel.

Even some of the big channels I think got a little bit lucky and I don't know if they could start over and build a successful, self-sustaining channel. I've done it multiple times now. Tech Quickie grows pretty much on its own without much boosting from LinusTechTips these days. I just use LTT to give new channels a little boostie.

Yep, that's a big part of the reason we do it too. There's no dollar value that can be attached to being more connected with your audience/community (funny how they blend together when you create a site like this where they can interact)

Linus would you ever sell this website if you could get a ton of money by doing so?

how so?

They don't seem like reasonable numbers for the forums of a YouTuber and his company. Linus is here on the thread and the numbers don't even make sense to him

That would make the website our most valuable asset by FAR.

These numbers don't make a ton of sense to me, and because they are based more on raw traffic numbers rather than factoring in the value of the brand or the type of traffic, they likely have very little bearing on what I could actually sell it for.

I'd be interested to know what the YouTube channel is worth. Very few YT channel sales have actually gone through...

P.S. Hi Linus!!

yeah, its amazing what you see even when your just brought together with one common interest. one thing that you guys should look at is the front page again, seemed like a great idea, and a lot of people who visit this forum as it grows is the people who just see it on Google, not regulars. so a clean look like that is more inviting then just a forum.

another problem with that value is, who else would want to own LTTs forum? so Doubt that's very accurate on that account. its a domain that's very tailored to your channel.

yup the numbers dont make sense at all. i was just typing in URL's and decided to type in LTT. it doesnt fit with LTT but a forum like XDA or a website like disney do belong at their monetary values. but all of it is solely based on traffic. i was just stating how we have grown so much in almost 2 years.

Lol. That's a laugh and a half. Our Google ad revenue was like $10-15k last year for this site and they cut us off a month ago for a thread that had pictures of women in bathing suits on it, so for right now it's running purely on contributors, which isn't a ton when we factor in the amount we spend on hosting and security and how much time it takes to admin.

We do it because it's yet another way we can engage with our community.

So that explains why I haven't been seeing Google ads on LTT. Does that mean I can turn AdBlock on again until they're re-enabled?

That's not entirely true. I would say TechQuickie grew because of you as a personality, which was gained through NCIXTechTips and LinusTechTips. You also had all the assets from LinusTechTips at your disposal, expensive cameras, a place to film, a whole team who were trained in producing YouTube content and had it as their day job and you were able to give it an initial bump through LinusTechTips.

e89b287e46.png

You can clearly see a significant gradient change after every bump. Probably due to YouTube related videos reasons.

2b6dbd9eab.png

Note you can see two spikes in the TechQuickie, one was the original channel release on YouTube, sending your audience from LTT.

Looking back the Q1 2014 spike was due to simultaneous give-aways on both channels which you can see on both daily sub graphs. So again, sending in your audience from LTT.

d2ebffdcea.png

Clearly TechQuickie benefits a lot from LinusTechTips.

Here is a projection if you didn't send viewers in from LTT [1], if you only sent them in once [2], and now that you have sent them in the 3rd time.

And this is with all the assets the channel gained from LTT (equipment, crew and a place to film).

Conclusion: More annual giveaways on LTT requiring a TechQuickie subscription! Everyone wins!

Are you serious? In that case, advertisers need to stop pushing dodgy Russian and Asian women ads on me. I'm in a committed relationship dammit!

PS: This forum will always be on my adblock whitelist regardless! :D

By 'cut us off', does that mean they banned the Adsense account?

Linus presence and links to the youtube channel is probably the primary driver of all the traffic to the forum.  If linus ever left it would be like Atlas leaving his post to hold up the weight of the world.

nice reference, though harsh to say, we can probably manage w.out him in the forums. though the youtube channel might take a hit if he left that w/ slick

true total biscuit seems to be amazed on your progression and how you can be open to both viewer's and companies.

tech quickie has really hit a nail on its head though, with quick video's to answer those wtf moments

Its all about those volumetric clouds
