How to start a tech-related YouTube channel?

Hey guys,

My R9 290 review felt good to write and discuss. This made me consider doing a YouTube channel based around tech. A few problems though.

- My editing ability is akin to a three year old

- Zero budget

- My camera rig is my Galaxy Note 3

- My voice sounds a bit strange

I would do this channel part time as I am in my GCSE year. But would make videos as often as possible. All I need is advice. Should I set up a Patreon account in order to buy products to review? Should I invest in a tripod? Anything else I'm missing?

Definitely invest in a tripod. If it's just you doing the directing and talking, a cheaper one will work fine (you can't really pan while you're on camera). If you can't afford a tripod, a stack of books or anything else would work. Everyone thinks their voice sounds strange to themselves. After a while of hearing yourself, it's not bad. There are plenty of editing tutorials on the interwebs to read for years.

so here is how i have done my tech channel so far: 

 

1. i watched this video on editing w/ sony vegas 4 years ago and now today i can do anything from those basic steps to choosing quick camera roles w/ multiple footage, you just have to play around w/ the program and watch alot of videos on how to do it. 

 

2. get a camera tripod, i use my htc one rubber banded to a old panasonic camcorder, get a phone mount with the tripod so you dont have to rubber band stuff in order to keep stuff steady. the note camera is good enough to keep good quality video, just get some nice lighting, maybe a clip on lamp or something (preferably white light) 

 

3. review old stuff at first and talk about why you use them and not so much the technical aspect of it, that will give personality to the channel. if you are camera shy dont be infront of the camera as an obligation. your voice may sound weird to you but if you stay committed it will be like hearing linus speak since you havent listed to your own voice as much.  you can also do software reviews and tutorials in order to grow your channel. i did one on the razer cotex software as one of my first videos and got a nice 150 view video. 

 

4. dont set up a patreon right away since youtube viewers can be a bunch of ass holes and will think you are doing it only for the money. try to grow your channel as much as you can then try and send emails to manufacturers and get review samples in. 

 

oh and sony vegas is quite easy to torrent...  you didnt hear it from me

Space Journal #1: So Apparently i  was dropped on the moon like i'm a mars rover, in a matter of hours i have found the transformers on the dark side of the moon. Turns out its not that dark since dem robots are filled with lights, i waved hi to the Russians on the space station, turns out all those stories about space finding humans instead of the other way around is true(soviet Russia joke). They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.

oh never mind, it is a written review. A phones camera will be fine, if the lighting is right and you use a tripod.

I experimented on a tech channel and I got 6 subscribers in 2 months, 6,432 views and I had 9 videos. Should I continue or focus on a different channel?
