FX8320 with R9 290?

The FX 6300 is only a couple bucks away from the 8320; Ditch the optical drive that is obsolete and useless and get the 8core.

You need the optical drive to burn cds and watch dvds, I'll see if the 8320 fits into the budget.

Is this better than the 8350?  I thought that the 8350 trades blows with even the 3770k.  My friend isn't looking to overclock btw.

A non-overclocked 8350 will perform as well as an i3, intel has a much better IPC and it shows in gaming. AMD is pretty good for certain productivity work, but intel is normally better. The i5 listed can't overclock fyi, only "k" and "x" models can (the pentium g3258 is the exception).

Without OC don't bother much with e FX8320, it only shines in value once you increase the clockspeeds.

I'm confused as to why Linus chose a 6300 and 970 combo on his $1000 holiday build if the AMD cpus are so lackluster then.

Because AMD sponsored the build.
