If he hasnt activated it yet, yes.

You might as well just use Windows 10 for now.

I wouldn't advise someone to use an OS that's intended for testing purposes on their main machine without fully disclosing it's a giant keylogger meant to provide feedback on what's being searched and so on.

You can only use your friends activation key if he isnt using it.

It cannot be on 2 computers at the same time.

The disk will work, you can install windows, but you won't be able to activate or update it unless you buy a copy.

You're gucci. It will just ask you for the code in a month or so.

Actually, I think Microsoft removed that ability. When I installed W8.1 a few days ago, it wouldn't allow me to proceed with installation without typing in my key. The "next" key was greyed out and there wasn't any "skip this step" options.

I believe this depends on the build/release.  I've done this with retail and technet builds and it always allows me to enter a key later.  If I recall this was not the case with an HP OEM disc I used several months ago.

@tribeofham

Technet builds are different, OEM and Retail builds can't do this.

There is no trial period for Win8 if you borrow the CD from your friend, cause the installation will not continue without the product key.

The only trial you can try out is Win 8.1 Enterprise, it gives a 90 day trial before the user has to buy it.
