Microsoft’s Rape Joke At E3

At Microsoft's E3 conference, while showing off Double Helix's Killer Instinct a producer made a joke that could be construed as being a rape joke. While I didn't think it was completely intentional and thus a bit funny, knowing the internets, it doesn't come too surprising that several people were offended, so this is what microsoft had to say:

“Yesterday, during the Xbox E3 briefing, one of our employees made an off the cuff and inappropriate comment while demoing ‘Killer Instinct’ with another employee. This comment was offensive and we apologize. At Microsoft, being open and respectful with others is central to our code of conduct and our values. Bullying and harassment of any kind is not condoned and is taken very seriously. We remain committed to make gaming fun for everyone, and in that effort, we must lead by example.”

That really wasn't enough to stop Twitter users from expressing their disappointment, though...

I kinda feel bad for MS, everything they do seems to result in bad PR and I feel this was way too exaggerated and just random gamer trash talk, but what do you think, was it just gamer trash talk or an intentional sexist joke?

It's one freaking employee that said that, it doesn't represent the whole company! And it's not like he's the only person to say that either, plenty of people say "I'm raping/getting raped" while gaming, and they don't intend to offend rape victims or anything like that.

That's pretty funny, but like you said I don't think it was intentional he probably just got into the game or something. Sometimes people just need to chill out and let things go

Me: Yeah I just really can't get my H220 working again, I've tried everything that was suggested in the forum.

Brian (Swiftech Support): Hmm, have you tried slapping it?

I don't see how that could have been intentional at all. My own seven-year-old brother says those same lines when he plays Super Smash Brothers and he's never had his mouth washed with soap for it.

Come on people, i'm speechless... What did this have to to with rape? I could picture a doctor saying the same to a child while giving a tetanus shot...

This just gets associated with rape, because people who pretend to be offended, watch to much japanese hentai rape porn...

I'm not really that concerned about what he say during the conference. MOBA games has a lot worse TT than that, though and I think TT is a part of the gaming culture whether we like it or not.

It's an immature comment.  I mean, the phrase "just let it happen" obviously implies sexual themes.

I don't think it's that big a deal.  Certainly not deserving of "rape" headlines.  It's on the same level as "that's what she said" and stuff like that.  People say that stuff all the time.  It was obviously just a joke.  Just saying it's a dumb comment to make when you're on stage as a public representative of a large corporation.

The game is develop by Double Helix Games. So? you ask.

Well, here is the entire list of games that the company developed:

Well good luck with that, Double Helix is pretty terrible... They're the guys who made Battleship and Green Lantern and several other games which are known for being really bad...

Edit: just check the post above me...:(

Yes, this may be overblown. But the gaming community at large has given itself a bad image with it's trash talk and is something that requires attention. I would say that instead of justifying something others see as a problem maybe we should look at why they get offended and see how we can be better than our accusations.

Even if we are the ones wronged here, justification is not the way to take care of it.

trash talk can still be sexist. It isn'r because you're trashing someone that the comment magically ceases to be sexist. The phrase is as sexist as the F word.

This, the contrived political correctness in especially North American culture needs to stop. It was only 4-5 days ago I got a warning on these very forums for an innocent meme post. People that side of the atlantic really need to sort out their problems and not try to impose them on everyone else.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.
