So I can't decide which GTX 970 to choose; the MSI Gaming or the Gigabyte G1. I've always been a fan of MSI, but it doesn't have a backplate. Do backplates do anything at all, like help with cooling?

Backplates will help with cooling because it gives the heat somewhere to transfer to that'll be made of metal. That being said it isn't going to improve it drastically, I'd be surprised to see it lower the temp by 1 degree.

For the most part backplates are more of a cosmetic thing, they hide the PCB and they prevent/reduce sagging.

The only real reason for backplates are cosmetic, even if they support the Card, it would hold itself without.

CPU: Xeon 1230v3 - GPU: GTX 770  - SSD: 120GB 840 Evo - HDD: WD Blue 1TB - RAM: Ballistix 8GB - Case: CM N400 - PSU: CX 600M - Cooling: Cooler Master 212 Evo

Wrong.Backplates are to improve the rigidity of a card. The matter if you have a "strange" case and you want to place the gpu card somehow else or in case you move the pc a lot the backplate will ensure that the gpu will stay in one piece

nvm...didn't read the last part.sorry

This ^ + they make the card easier to handle as one doesn't have to risk touching the PCB and short circuiting the GPU/card. ;)

You don't have to be so like (((((WRONG))))). It's not nice. You can get your point across in a much nicer way without being mean like that. ;)

Well you probably don't so much need to say sorry to me but to TheMcSame. ;)

You may not mean to come across in such a way, but you unfortunately do. Maybe you could instead say "Sorry, but I don't think that's quite correct" or something similar and then proceed to say what you wanna say, okay? :)

I will from now on because i know that some people don't find me so "nice".So yeah i guess a nicer way to say the things is better

Hmm, what's nice?

Does it exist in the world anymore?

I thought it has gone extinct like the dinosaurs did.

I'm not necessarily saying that you're not a nice person, I'm quite sure you are, you just need to try to say things in a way that doesn't come across in a harsh sort of way. I've probably been guilty of it myself and that's why I'm trying to encourage you to do better. :)

So yeah i guess a nicer way to say the things is better

Exactly! :)

I'm so glad I didn't unintentional start another argument. I didn't really know which way you were gonna go. So I'm glad you chose to take it onboard. Some people on here I've tried to encourage and they've thrown it back in my face, so to speak, so its a relief that you didn't do the same. :)

You do have a point but, a copper water block is heavy, and the backplate will help support the card. I would always suggest one if doing a water loop, but outside of that, its just eye candy........

Backplates:

They look nice, stop sag (can be really annoying depending on how fussy you are) and give the memory modules some extra heat dissipation.

However, between the MSI Gaming and Gigabyte G1, go the G1. It's got a cherry picked core and a hella nice cooler, so it'll near guarantee a overclock better than the MSI card.

I think it is more than cherry picked. I would say it is like 780Ti Kingpin level binning

The Gigabyte G1 should theoretically offer better overclocks and cooler temps under load while the MSI gaming should offer quieter operation while under light to medium gaming from its 0rpm fan mode.

I have a 980 MSI gaming and it, at least for me, does not have any sag sitting in my system so a backplate would merely be a cosmetic item, thought I would have liked a backplate on it for said cosmetic reasons.

I don't own a Gigabyte G1 but I can see how a backplate would help sagging as its cooler is quite large and has to be pretty heavy.
