I dont see how you would fit a 120mm radiator in a compact Mitx rig.

And the 970s would still perform better because of lower power consumption and less heat output.

 

All we need now is a dual-970 air cooled double slot GPU

Yeah, only because the two chips on one PCB makes entirely too much heat. Not for overclocking or anything, the cooler keeps the 295x at slightly higher temps than the 290x

you can't overlook the liquid cooling. I thought the same thing and went with 2 290x's and ended up having to liquid cool them anyway for heat and noise reasons. Granted mine overclock better and therefore perform better overall than a 295x2 will, but I definitely spent more money.

Heat and power consumption are limiting factors for overclocking. Lower heat and power consumption = more overclocking. This is why AMD R9 series cards struggle to get over 1100MHz, while nvidia 700 series could easily do 1200-1300 on air cooling easily.

Maybe drivers have been revised since I've looked last, but that's what I remember seeing.
