I got a 1440p monitor a while back, it's awesome to work on. But my current Redeon HD 7950 can't really handle the higher resolution on higher settings, the frame rate drops to low for my liking. So i'm looking to get a new GPU to get a better gaming experience.

I've been looking at the GTX970. I like the low noise and power usage of this card, I have my pc next to me on my desk, so less noise makes me happy.

But, is the GTX 970 good for 1440p gaming or are there better cards out there for about the same price?

Can you guys give me some advice ?

The GTX 970 is slightly pushing it for 60fps on 1440p. I would sooner recommend getting a 980

Unless you want to spring for the 980 or a second 970, that's about as good as you can get.

Try grab a 780ti if you can find one for cheap :) great bargins mine runs 1440p beautifully

If not it a 970 will do a decent job though maybe not fluent 60fps on all games also look into an r9 290x

IDEAL would be a 980

A 970 would be great, a 980 even better (crank that AA) you need only consider cost...

Ever hear of overclocking? The 980 is not worth the premium imo. Point of reference, my single 780 oc'd is enough to max most games at 1440p comfortably.

IF you could lessen your condescending tone and took a few seconds to read ym sig you would've seen that my very own GTX 970 is overclocked...

Not saying it's not doable, in fact it's very doable but you will relatively soon find yourself not hitting ultra settings with stable 60fps

980, the people who are suggesting 970 are only considering cost effectiveness, if you want the best 1440p experience, 980. Well you have options to go SLI setups.

Yeah, that 7 fps difference is going to make or break your gaming experience when you're already hitting 60+ frames on a 60hz monitor.

You need to count every frame thats over 1. Otherwise I can just constantly lower the GPU tier saying "its only 7 frames, get the (insert lower end gpu) over the (insert higher end gpu)" until i reach the gt610

You're a Derp... Let's look at the WORST case, and make it a fair comparison... when your getting 45fps rendered  because vsync is on and you can only get 58 fps on your 970 but a 980 will do 70 fps in the same situation i guess blblnt?

980 = 20%+ faster than 970

980 = 50%+ more expensive than 970

Those are average frames, the 980 will have a higher minimum frame, resulting in a better experience overall. the OP did ask for the BEST 1440p gaming GPU, not the most cost effective GPU.

Thanks for all the feedback.
I may not have explained myself ferry well, I am looking for the best GPU for 1440p gaming, withing the price range of a GTX 970. The price of a GTX 980 is a little to high for me.

Not saying it's not doable, in fact it's very doable but you will relatively soon find yourself not hitting ultra settings with stable 60fps

I have no problem with overclocking if it helps getting to a stable frame rate. I can always lower some settings if I can't hit the 60fps on ultra. I'm not the kind of person who needs to have everything on ultra settings.

I don't know how cheap 7950s are at this point, if you can even buy anymore, but I have 2 7950s in crossfire and it's awesome for 1440p gaming! :) I would suggest an r9 280 (I believe that's the rebadged 7950) and put the two in crossfire :)

I'd love to do that, but my motherboard and case won't allow it:) I'm not going to upgrade my mobo and case just so get a cheaper GPU.

I did look at the R9 290x, but i've heard its very loud an runs very hot. Not really ideal for a pc that's next to me on my desk.

Depends how it effects you, plenty of people have them and are not bothered, plus there are some quieter ones like the MSI Twin Frozr etc

780ti or 980 would be the best bet still... a 970 will do it but not on everything highest

Then the GTX 970 is perfect for your needs. There is no better alternative except for 780/780 Ti's with severe price drops

That's a different story then. You could go for a 290x, or a 780Ti, but they all perform about the same anyway, I'd actually go for a 780Ti, because it has a higher memory bandwidth(i think it was 352 bit?) than the 970's 256bit.
