To combat the poor AA options, I run the game at 1440p with DSR (can be done using VSR with AMD GPUs, same thing) and use FXAA. The result is better, sharper visuals (greatly reduced jaggies) with little performance hit. I found that any other AA setting for the game, besides FXAA, resulted in WORSE visuals. Even made a video about it back when the game first launched:

I don't really trust DSR. I cannot recall one game where it made positive difference, unless I double the resolution which means 6880x2880 which means quadrupling pixel count vs 3440x1440 which means 20 FPS on 1080 SLI :D And this is only in selected games, usually it breaks everything. Using 5160x2160 (1.5x1.5) always looks much worse than native 3440x1440. I like when resolution scaling is implemented in games natively though, it always works nicely and there is enormous difference in games like American Truck Simulator where you can use up to 400% resolution scale. Thats the great option to use full power in older or less demanding games.

Too bad ROTTR doesn't have something like TAA or MSAA. MSAA probably is outdated and won't be used anymore because even if it is used in games like Watch Dogs 2 or AC: Syndicate it does not make as much difference as it did in older games like Black Flag or even older AC games. TAA + some sharpening through SweetFX is the best option I think, little to none performance cost and effects better than anything else.

I assumed you were playing at 1080p. ;) 3440x1440 should look pretty darn good at native res with FXAA, I would think. But yeah, it's a shame this game doesn't have any better implementations of AA options.

One thing I'll miss about green team is VSR. I love the fact that it scales everything including the cursor. Hell, it's what made me realize that I want a smaller (23") 1440p monitor over a larger one. And I can honestly say that it makes a really noticable difference at 23"/1080p. And it's amusing as hell running games at 1440p high or ultra and getting 30fps+ on a 7950. :P

I've tried 4K DSR on my GTX480, and I wasn't impressed with how it looked, even after playing with sharpness or whatever it was called. It just didn't look "crisp" like you'd think it would.

EDIT: And in my experience, VSR has better compatibility with games.

The thing to remember when using DSR with a 1080p display is there are still only a certain number of pixels and pixel density is still lower, so it will never look perfectly crisp.

Also something to note with DSR is there is a setting in NVCP that can adjust the "sharpness" of it. I think it's called DSR blend or something and the setting is based on a percentage. The higher the setting, the "fuzzier" the effect will be. When I use it I try to keep this setting below 30% so the image stays more sharp and less soft.

I only really use it in a few games that have really poor built-in AA options like ROTTR to get a better image.

I know this, but like in comparison to VSR, DSR was just not impressive. Even when I got the sharpness tuned in perfectly it still couldn't really match VSR, IMO.

What are you using to take the screenshots? Sorry noob question here, this thread is so big i'm having trouble finding answers...

I record it with ReLive and use Magix Edit to export them frame by frame as BMP then I compress it with MS Paint to JPEG format for lower size

Ok. Thanks for the speed and elaborate response. Any guides you can think of to learn how to do anything like this? I'm really glad I saw your status update btw, I've been looking for something like this for a loooong time. I just have had no idea how to go about it.

Can't think of one right now, but there are free programs out there that can export video to picture

Screenshots I've posted were taken with steam. They look fine, IMO. There is an option to have steam save a raw file of the screenshot if you don't want any image quality degradation.

Oh man, that's an awful ass way to do it. You might as well use whatever screenshot tool the client you run the game on uses. Poorly compressing something lossy that was already lossy just makes it far worse.

You could just grab FRAPS and use it for screenshots. Every screenshot I take is done with FRAPS using PNG capture then uploaded to Discord and I have to say that they look pretty darn good.

No it's not that bad, I actually want to record bunch of videos for a YouTube video I create so instead of revisiting the game and taking screenshot I can just take it from the video file instead

I was just looking at that! Why upload to discord though? And how would you edit them?

MS Paint is like the worst thing you could use to export JPEGs. It just makes them god-awful, to say the least. I'd recommend grabbing GIMP and compressing them to JPEG at 95 quality or higher.

Speaking of which, do you know how I get my screenshots from TF2?

I have a bind which makes the game take a screenshot at 100 quality JPEG. Too bad what I believe is the chroma sampling or whatever is not great, to say the least. Oh well, at least it's not a compressed mess.

Here's an example screenshot. The higher the resolution for it, the better.

Hmm I will take a look at GIMP, it's just too long and slow for me to load up every picture and export it
