well the 290x would have better performance of the 970 but if you go with the 970 g1 gaming gigabyte card then you could over clock it heaps up to the point of stock 980 stable

u wot m7+1

Which evers cheaper, 290x is SLIGHTLY above 970 in raw power, versus the 970s advantage in efficiency... they in all reality cancel each other out.

I'd just get whichever one you can grab for cheaper, they trade blows in benchmarks. The 290x would probably be better at 4K cause of the wider mem bus but that's about it

thats interesting. well I would suggest the 970 for the new features, lower heat output and power consumption.

Reading Anandtech's review of the GTX 970, it appears that they really trade places in a lot of different games. Sometimes the 970 is better, other times the 290X is better.. TBH, buy whichever one you feel like buying (whether you think one has a better looking cooler, better video outputs, other technologies (physX/etc)).

Real world performance seems close enough to be somewhat negligible.

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

so do you think buying r9 would be a wise choice because its 20$ cheaper ? or vise versa!

970 for lower power consumption, more OC headroom and lower heat output. Just wait for the 970 to be again in stock. My 970 G1 can easily get to 1500Mhz on the core, it's worth it.

Gigabyte has the worst cooler for the r9 290x, it will run really hot.

What about monitor support ( I do not want to start a new 290/x vs 970)

As far as I am aware AMd support 6 x  monitors and 970 supports 4, but is AMD support 6 x 1080p monitors?

Obviously I do not mean gaming, but for workstation style use

GTX 970 is the sweetspot of any AMD or Nvidia gaming GPU atm, go with it.

The GTX 970 consumes less power, so in theory it can be a bit cheaper for your electric bill.. However, PCs don't consume very much power in the grand scheme of things, so the savings on the electric bill will be negligible (~$15 a year or so).. When talking about $300+ GPUs, a $20 difference in up-front cost is also negligible..

In terms of cost, there isn't really a big difference at all.. Both are very strong cards (possibly overkill for 1080p, but that isn't really an issue) and you're going to get a great gaming experience with either one. Like I said, buy whichever one you want.

I recently bought a GTX 980 and have no regrets.. I would probably lean towards a GTX 970, but there aren't really any major reasons why.

The 290x seems like the card with more raw horsepower. Its in crossfire at higher resolutions that the 290x seems to pull ahead of the 970, so the 290x is probably more future proof despite being less new. The 290x also seems to give more consistent frame rates than the 970 where the frame rates seem to vary more.

The 970 performs better in most games.

Those benches are all 1080p (the 970's strong point) and the fact that they are using the dodgy-as-shit reference 290x and a custom-cooled superclocked 970 make those numbers unreliable at best.

False, that was an initial issue with a review production sample that was ironed out before retail release, it is actually now one of the better cards.

I'd definitely go with a 290x but I'm a 4k user so it may be different for you.
