Should I REALLY go X99 or should I go for Z97?

X99

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

People tend to drastically overestimate the toll video editing takes on your system.

I did complex, multi-layered video with effects just fine on an i5 on Z68 and 16GB of RAM. While not ideal, and lagged horribly compared to my current 64GB, 2400Mhz RAM on a 6-core-CPU setup, it worked and wasn't unbearable.

For video editing, a high end Z97 build with an i7 will do everything you need to. X99 will be a clear performance boost when used side by side, but unless you're directly comparing, it's unlikely you'll find the Z97 board unsatisfactory.

Whether the performance gain is worth it is up to you, but I find the enthusiast platform is better due to features and PCI-E lanes rather than raw performance, the performance just removes any tedium when you're doing professional work.

So....you'd still overall recommend X99 then? Lol

Only if a bit of lag every now and then bothers you. Unless you are a professional video editor, I'd take the Z97 with a high end I7. And use the savings to get a high capacity, fast kit of RAM and a hard drive for backups.

Hmm...well wouldn't an SLI config fix that?

I don't like the Green Drives. I've experienced 5400RPM and don't like it. I honestly find stacking Blue drives (because WD is stupid and wont release at least a 2TB Blue) is a great option.

Probably the drives that have 250GB platters. The newer ones with 1TB platters are freaking fast. Check uk.hardware.info for hdd benchmarks, the greens are significantly quieter and sometimes even faster than the WD10EZEX or slightly slower.

What model of the green drive is that?

Could, it will certainly help. You can't encode everything using a GPU though.

Well I meant just generally gameplay wise while playing, streaming, doing multitasking in general, etc.

Me personally I would say x99 but I have reasons behind that and have been using enthusiast chippers since X38.

That's not the only reason but yes I'm used to a platform that can take whatever I throw at it be it software or hardware.
