so my brother bought some speakers from my dad (my dad kinda gets free stuff from his clients) for like 75 bucks, and we were watching a movie (Edge of Tomorrow) and as were watching something just kept scratching at the back of my mind "You know the bass is nice, and punchy, and the mids are okay, but for a supposedly $1400 speaker system I would expect more...", but I put it off and enjoyed the rest of the movie, but again it was bothering and I decided to google "Mclaren BLU-3". Suddenly! load, behold, article after article of how these speakers are a scam! So this is the moral decision I have to make, should I...

1. tell him they are a scam product, even though he is happy (I mean they do sound MILES better then is shit TV speakers!)

2. leave it be and let him enjoy bliss, but have a higher risk of him buying from this scamming manufacturer again...

It's a scam. Don't keep secrets like that from people.

As long as he is happy with it and he only paid $75 he shouldn't be too disappointed.

I would say let him enjoy what he has now and just in the future when he tells you that he is going to be buying speakers, just nudge him in a different direction and "suggest" a better alternative place to buy audio equipment and not the scam manufacturers.

tell him. it's a life lesson, this happens and he needs to realize that. Better to learn it for $75 than for a large sum of money later on.

I would tell him. at least he is not at that much of a loss anyway. $75 is still cheap for a working surround sound system even if its crappy, so at least he has that going for him.

I had a roommate once who bought speakers out of the back of a van for a couple hundred bucks, giving him some story that the speakers were re-branded high-end speakers that didn't pass the factory QA. I didn't have the heart to tell him they were cheap crap, and when I finally did he tried to downplay it as "big speaker manufacturers trying to eliminate cheap competition by spreading lies about scams."

How about both?! Keep the speakers and tell him it's a scam so he doesn't buy from that guy again

I would tell him. Even though from what I can tell, it's not your dad's fault, as he was given them for free.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

Even if they are rip off speakers, if they sound great for $75 it sounds like he got his monies worth, so, seems fine.

I would open with the line:  "It's a good thing you only paid $75 for those speakers dad...."

I'm not following. Your brother bought these speakers from your dad for $75, who got them for free?

Goddamn, rocks in the units.. decorative "tweeters," giant empty cabinet.. This sounded alright?

surprising! yeah, but not great. I did grab it to just feel the wait, but they aren't that heavy so my guess is that there are know rocks in these ones.

Brother, dad sold them to him, because it was something he got from a job he did

I don't think your brother cares what you think and I know your dad doesn't. Do not give advice unless asked is always the best policy.

what do you mean "I know you dad doesn't" my dad didn't knowingly scam my brother, because as I said my dad gets a surprisingly large number of really expensive items for free from his clients (general contractor) so he most likely wouldn't have thought of looking into these...

AFAIK it's not even surround sound, all of the speakers are on one channel.
