You don't need to watch the movies to understand the game. They're barely connected at all.

OH Thank you, but anyway what is the correct order?

LoTR then Hobbit.

Umm no, chronologically in the Lotr universe you're wanting to preferably READ the hobbit then the Lotr's books.

Movies in chronological order.

1.Hobbit

2. The Fellowship of the Ring

3. The Two Towers

4. The Return of the King

But like others have suggested try reading the books first, and then watch the movies.

No, you should read all the books, including the poems written in Elvish. Then, you should write a 5000 word essay on the relationship of the characters and settings to the nihilistic and destructive reality that Tolkien lived during his military service in the first world war. Only after that you can play the game.

What? It's part of the minimum spec requirements.

I saw the first movie that came out (The Fellowship of the Ring) and did not like it at all.  Some time later a came across the audio book at my library which got me hooked for good.  With out the background knowledge provided in the books the movies feel like they are missing something.

That said I doubt a triple A game would be released that would require any homework before it could be played.  I just think you will have more fun if you read the books besides they are great books so read them whether or not you want to play the game.
