Alright, so down to business. Right now I have 3 4k monitors in surround and my two MSI GTX 780 Lightning's can handle most games that don't demand a lot on high quality in 4k surround. (Such as gmod)

Most games like bf4 or dead rising 3 however freeze/start to lag a lot when I turn 4k surround on. I want to know if I get two GTX 980's will that solve most of my problems?

The reason why I am asking for 2 instead of 3 gpus is because my asus sabertooth z87 can only hand two way sli.

Its such as helping says, you really need at LEAST 3 way 980's or 780 ti's for that kind of monster setup.

Pickup  a few 6GB Titans or the GTX 780 TI 6GB models

No such thing available as 6gb 780 Ti, There is 8gb 290x's tho from sapphire.

Why are you playing fps games with surround? You'll be at a huge disadvantage.

The answer is clearly no.

4K surround at this point requires at least a 3 way SLI. In that case it would even demand 4 GPUS probably. Though I have to say I´ve never ran 4K surround only a single 4K monitor.

Maybe this changes when nVidia and AMD will release their next gen card after the 20nm shrink. But as of right now there is no 2 way config that can handle 3 monitors in 4K properly unless you play 5 year old games.

LOL OP some games struggle with 2 x GTX 980s at the settings you are talking about at 4K with one monitor.  Look at this review. http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/09/19/nvidia-gtx-980-tested-sli-4k-and-single-gpu-benchmarks-and-impressions/

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Tri SLI 980's can push 60fps at 4k. One 4k.

Good luck getting a nice experience in surround.

I'd not even bother.

jesus 4k surround you'll want to try at least 3 way SLI.

Someone told me that I should just wait for the 8GB version of 980 but I have no clue when that will come out. How log ago did the titan black come out after the titan?

Why are you playing fps games with surround? You'll be at a huge disadvantage.

Because I'm a ballar.

Would it be worth it to switch out my mobo for an extra PCIe slot and get a third 980 or just to wait for the 8gb version of 980?

The problem is VRAM so technically if I just wait for the 8gb version of the 980 I should be able to play 4k surround nicely with 2 way sli.

Honestly i would sell the two other 4k monitors and use two 780 Ti's (or 980's) to fuel one 4k monitor and use a 1080 as second monitor, 4k surround just isn't mature yet.

How much vram would 4k surround need?

Well 1080p uses 1gb, 4k around 3gb, so like 9/8 GB. Not possible yet.

You are maybe not so much a ballar as if you´d think... no offense though but buying 3 4K monitors without the proper base, which in that case better be a gaming rig on the very bleeding edge of technology is a bit blunt... I run a sinlge 4K monitor with a GTX980 2way SLI and this is as good as it gets for me. Performance overall is very nice but I wouldn´t dare to hook up another 4K monitor...

8GB VRAM will help but not resolve the issue. Too less raw computing power.

Lmao, good one. You almost got me there.

Both my GTX 780's handle one 4k monitor with ease on the highest settings @ 60Hz. There is no way I am selling the other two monitors.

I am being sarcastic about the first part because everyone always gives me shit when I try to ask a simple question. I got all 3 4k monitors at a huge discount so don't worry about price. I am looking for performance. Not 8 Gigs but 16 (8*2) in sli, that should be more then enough vram with two 8gb gtx 980's.

Entirely depends on the game, i got around 30 FPS in metro 2033 / Last light redux  on 4k and that's far below what's tolerable for me, so i went back to 1440p monitors.

Lol surround on fps games is so dumb. Most games don't scale properly with x3 1080p let alone 4k... Besides that, your eyes can't focus on that much screen area. Surround is only beneficial for simulators.

Unfortunately it doesn´t work that way with SLI or CF.

VRAM doesn´t add up. It will be even with a 8GB cards in SLI 8GB and not 16GB VRAM.
