Perfect this is just the answer I was looking for. Can you link me to the video/article?

and that's an easy game to drive, but again you can just turn down some settings or anti-aliasing (or use the new holy MFAA, or the good ol' FXAA, or the nice TXAA, well you have options) to play the latest AAA games

I've seen four Titan do 4k surround. Their 6GB seemed adequate.

Yeah,

Buti don't think 4gb will cut it.

Now that I have gathered all the information that I needed I have decided to switch out my mobo from a ASUS SABERTOOTH z87 to a Asus Maximus VI Extreme. This will allow me to put 4 GTX 980's.

I just have one question; I have a NZXT Phantom Full case, will a Asus Maximus VI Extreme fit in there with all 4 980's?

Also will I be needing to upgrade my 1000w psu?

You are aware that you´ll be running 4 GTX980s in PCIe 3.0 x4 right?

I do not know if you´ll get any noticable input lag off this but you can give it a try.

Shit, didn't see that coming. Can you recommend me a mobo that is lga 1150, atx, and has 4 way sli on PCIe 16?

You're not going really going to find 4 way @ x16 on Z97 or pretty much any platform but there are boards that offer 4-way SLI on Z97.

ASRock Z97 Extreme9, GA-Z97X-Gaming GT, ASUS Z97-WS, MSI Z97 XPOWER AC to name a few.

Which board would you recommend out of all of them?

Dude where do you get that much money from?

Which one has more features?

Also if I put one of those boards in my NZXT phantom full case, will all 4 graphics cards fit? The reason why I am asking because on my z87 board right now the PCIe slot is really close to the PSU and I'm afraid that it won't fit. If you don't understand what I am talking about then tell me so that I can take a picture and try to explain it.

The ASRock is more feature rich.

According to what I read online the case should support 4-way SLI. I know 3-way SLI is guaranteed. That will probably be something you are going to have to measure with dimensions.

Alright, so down to business. Right now I have 3 4k monitors in surround and my two MSI GTX 780 Lightning's can handle most games that don't demand a lot on high quality in 4k surround. (Such as gmod)

Most games like bf4 or dead rising 3 however freeze/start to lag a lot when I turn 4k surround on. I want to know if I get two GTX 980's will that solve most of my problems?

The reason why I am asking for 2 instead of 3 gpus is because my asus sabertooth z87 can only hand two way sli.

Surround 4k really isn't great right now. Evem the Titan Z (2 cut down Titan Blacks) can't do it very well at all. So you could do it, but it would be like low settings 30 fps

As you can see it's very strange. I have 3 PCIe slots in my case and it feels like I only have room for two cards. I have a full case so it feels very strange. Do you really think that all 4 would fit with the ASRock mobo?

is there any difference between "4k surround" and 4k? or is surround just a fancy term?

It's a full tower so I really didn't think that it would be a problem.

EDIT: I just noticed, my case only has 7 expansion slots and not 8 :/

Now I feel lied to..... These are x16 slots as linus states...

This is not native PCIe lanes driven by the CPU... there´s nothing wrong with what I said and the Maximus VI Extreme is an expensive motherboard, and correct me if I´m wrong but didn´t you have a sabertooth?

So where am I lying here exactly?

When you come up with somehting like that make sure you do proper research before accusing people of lying. This is PLX and not native PCIe lanes. Sure it will give you more bandwith than 4x 3.0 but then again this board features this and some others do but that doesn´t mean this is featured by alle Haswell 1150 boards.

Kind of upets me really when some one comes up with this without knowing the proper background.

And PC Gameshardware just released an article today on how PCIe 3.0 x16 performs to PCIe 3.0 x8 (which equals to PCIe 2.0 x16)...

the reason for the 4x is that the z97 cpu's all have only 16 PCIe lanes, so even your 2 780's are running at x8 x8. t get more lanes you need the LGA2011-3 (or 2011) the 5820k has 28 lanes ( http://ark.intel.com/products/82932/ ) and the other two cpu for that socket have 40. So you could do three cards at x8 x8 x8 with the 5820k, or you could do two, x16 x8 (and still have 4 lanes to play with, if for example you have a raid card opr some other PCIe device)

The only information I could find on a Phantom case supporting 4-way SLI is the Phantom 820 Series which I dont believe is the model you have.
