Optimal hours sleep probably has studies involved to get to that conclusion.

Google should be able to help you pinpoint how they get to this conclusion.

I need about 7 hours to feel energized and refreshed. If I sleep more than 8 hours, I feel groggy and shitty the next day. It differs from person to person.

Did you know that Einstein slept for 10hrs each night?

everyone is different, but it's usually around 8 hours.

I've had 2 hours of sleep in the last 60 hours and I'm still somewhat functional. although I do feel like shit.

Sleep cycles m8. People sleep in 1 1/2 hour cycles. so really you should be sleeping either 7.5 hours or 9.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

They also say that it only takes about 2 hours to recover your mental state, and the rest on your physical state - so I guess it makes sense.

I'm thinking it's somewhat the opposite.

I feel physically okay, I'm not incredibly tired, my math and memory skills are fine. but my awareness is definitely far below normal.

The title of this thread upsets me.

If you had gotten 8hrs sleep on a regular basis, you may have had chosen to to search, really quickly, before stating its a "myth".(yes its a statement, there is no question mark)

Lack of sleep affects the brain quite negatively.  To be blunt, it leaves you stupid and open to suggestion.

Hell, sleep deprivation is a form of torture which can be lethal.

When I was in high school I'd feel fine with 4-6hrs.  Once in my mid 20s I became useless without 7-8hrs.

Sleep is important, and not just the length. I was hit with anxiety because my schedule was constantly fluctuating between day and night shifts. Even though I was getting "enough" sleep, I'd still show up and maybe start to slur speech or drool. It was scary at times, some people thought I was having a stroke.

I think I got like 11 hours of sleep yesterday.

Went to sleep a bit after 4 am, got up around 10 am, went back to sleep within 10 minutes, woke up around 4pm

It was lovely.  You all should try it.  I can't tomorrow since I have stuff to do though.

The longest I've ever slept was over 14 hours.  It was right after I'd been up nearly an entire day studying and preparing for academic decathlon.  I needed the time to rebuild the massive exertion my brain had been put through.  So many calls to logic, so much thinking, it really is exhausting.  Perhaps if I was born with a more efficient mind it would not take out so much energy, but no.  I have some capacity for critical thinking, but there is a price.

I am impelled not to squeak like a grateful and frightened mouse, but to roar...

There's plenty of time to sleep when you're dead, mate. If you're sleeping more than 10+ hours a night, you're wasting valuable time.

Time is too precious.

I like sleeping for about 8 hours too. I don't like sleeping for longer because I feel a bit horrible, and sleeping for too long makes me feel like I've wasted the day. I Just let my body wake itself up - I don't set alarms unless it's absolutely necessary.

I've read an article a few years back which says that the humans originally slept 4 hours in the afternoon and 4 hours in the evening which somewhat explains why we become sleepy after lunch and late at night and a probable source of the '8 hour sleep' thing...

we become sleepy after lunch

That's because our body reroutes blood from some bodyparts to the stomache and other organs that are involved in digestion. The brain and muscles get less oxygen which results in the feeling of tiredness.
