PSN, XBL, League of Legends, Battle.net, Path of Exile hit by massive DDoS attack

Aniallation

http://games.on.net/2014/08/psn-xbl-league-of-legends-battle-net-path-of-exile-hit-by-massive-ddos-attack/

A massive, distributed denial of service attack on major gaming networks that began on the weekend has continued overnight, with a group called Lizard Squad (here on Twitter) claiming responsibility.

Services affected so far include the PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE, all Battle.net logins for Blizzard titles, League of Legends, and Path of Exile. SOE’s John Smedley has confirmed that the matter has now been passed on to the FBI, but not before he was personally targeted: a San Diego-bound flight he was on was hit by a phony bomb threat, forcing his plane to divert.

(Honestly I have no clue what this even means)

Read up on this a little bit.  This so called "LizardSquad" sounds like a bunch of script-kiddies asking for some trouble.

Naw man, they just got this from a so-called "hacker" named FamedGod:

Hi, @FamedGod you fail sir. #LizardSquad

6am? wow thats rude of them

Most "hackers" are a sleep then from being up all night and they prefer to have little to no fuss/time to cover their tracks.

Unless it was the Chinese or Russians whole botnet you can't take down that many servers at the same time because of the way IPv4 and Layer 3 DDoS attacks works you'd need millions of PPS (packets per second) to take down all those servers and that takes a lot of bandwidth meaning they would of seen it coming and could have prevented against it vs a Layer 7 DoS were you only need a single PPS from a cell phone and because almost no one goes out of there way to disable IPv6 on they're server they can attack it very simply, Cloudflare can prevent against this even though they're not a anti-D/DoS service and they actually prefer Layer 7 attacks as it's easy as pie to take care of but because they're too lazy to take an extra 2 minutes to config their server they get attacked but this was likely a combination of both the Layer 7 actually taking it down then the Layer 3 just to be a massive pain in the ass.

Again, why aren't they hitting TWC, Netflix, and the FCC?

Netflix is actually decent. TWC is half decent, I get 50/5 mbps for $29, I would switch to FIOS for 50/50, but their installation charge is beyond ridiculous ($400 to install a fiber to Ethernet adapter, now that is BS), and the FCC, well that I could agree with.

Netflix recently began paying TWC for a "fast lane" thus ensuring the end of "net neutrality" and guaranteeing higher prices for everyone. I have cancelled netflix and will never use TWC if I can help it as a result, I am encouraging everyone else to do the same, if we can take down netflix (financially) before the FCC rules, then maybe we stand a chance.

Backward thinking won't help anything. If the FCC rules in favor of net neutrality, then Netflix could sue the ISPs who mandated 'fast lanes' for extortion. Now if the FCC rules against net neutrality, it can always be overturned via congressional action (something which will probably happen, and it has happened before).

Umm the fuck? They're paying TWC, along with Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon, because they are being FORCED to in order to deliver content at reasonable speeds to their subscribers. Go after the victim, that is a fucking wonderful idea and doesn't miss entire bloody point at all. Netflix has been and still is fighting FOR net neutrality, but they don't really have any options here.

Great, now they've got the cyberterrorism branch of the FBI involved.

Have fun 12 year olds, I hope you have properly shocked looks when you get booked for federal crimes. And yes, they've crossed into federal crimes with that plane bomb hoax.

Morons. The lot of them.

They aren't being forced as TWC and the rest have no legal means to force them (what TWC and the rest are doing is in fact illegal)

The issue here is that now, the FCC has no choice but to rule in favor of fast lanes, because of the rather large lawsuit that TWC and the rest would face if they ruled otherwise, and considering how many pockets these companies probably have their hands in, it makes the FCC ruling in favor of net neutrality almost null and void now. You watch, and mark my words, the FCC will NOT rule in favor of net neutrality. It would "hurt" too many people on the hill.

I feel bad for netflix, but the simple fact is, they caved and paid, and now we have to show the ISP's that we will not support any company that follows suit, it's a tought break for netflix, but again, they caved before the FCC ruled, so our only option is to make netflix go away, sending the message that "we will not stand for, or pay for, this bullshit" to the ISP's.
