1080P = 770/R9 280x/780/R9 290

1440/1600P or surround  = 780 TI or R9 290x

I'd always say R9 290 normal for the price/performance, but, if you're set on those two then the 780ti

The most common result of insufficient wattage is a paperweight that looks like a PC

dual 290s for the price you are paying for the 780Ti

dual high end gpu > single 780Ti

4GB 512bit VRAM > 3GB 384bit VRAM

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I 780ti will be faster, but a 290x has Mantle, which might be good.   But, then again the r9 290x has 4GB of VRAM instead of 3 and you might be able to crossfire r9 280x cards, which would be powerfuler than a single 780ti.

but in terms of just single cards, the 780ti will be faster in most games.  But for AMD optimized games they are like exactly the same.

I find it difficult to recommend a 780ti at this point. So I would go with a r9 290x, but you get a r9 290 for much less than a 290x but of course you loose performance. Considering the interesting development with watchdogs and its vram requirements for ultra, 290x would be the way I would go if I didn't already have a 780ti.

It might help if you tell us the difference in price.

Ugh

Different cards work for different people, ima go through pros and cons of each

780ti

Pros: Relatively Low power consumption and heat output

G-Sync

Phys-X

Gamestream

Fastest GPU core

Fastest Vram

Fantastic 1440p and 1080p performance

Cons: Expensive

3GB Frame buffer slows the card down in surround setups or 4k

290X

Pros: Relatively inexpensive

4GB makes it faster than 780ti in surround or 4k (Mind you not that much faster)

Mantle

True Audio

Cons: High heat output and power consumption

Slower at anything sub 4k

Different solutions work better for different people, make up your own mind. There is no definite answer.

Mantle only makes sense when you have weak CPU. in high-end CPU scenario it doesn't make sense & there's no difference in fps between Mantle & DirectX. And I'm sure everyone who's got r9 290x, he got also strong CPU.

As for the OP question: GTX 780 TI is more powerful than R9 290x, but costs also a more. So, it's up to you. Personally me, if I'd had enough money, I'd get GTX 780 TI, if not, than R9 290x.

actually, for games like Star Citezen where the cpu will be hammered.  I think there will be a vast improvement, and if GTA V supports Mantle it will be even more the improvement.  There is a noticable improvement with Mantle over Direct X.   I tried Battlefield 4 with my r9 270x and I gained quite a bit of fps.  10fps give or take, thats quite a bit!

Yes, the 780ti is faster.  But yeah, there is a difference with Mantle, so it depends on whether OP wants to get the best right now, or invest in the future with more VRAM and the ability to have Mantle.

Some of my friends, who got 3770, they tried battlefield 4 & thief with mantle & direct x & they didn't have any difference in performance, just mantle visuals were looking a little worse..
