AMD is really falling behind NVIDIA

I have a question. Everybody says that AMD consume way more power. But currently AMD cards doesn't have something like GPU Boost 2.0, that boost your clockspeeds and voltage if temps are good. 

 

It's a question, and before you call me AMD Fanboy, I currently own a GTX 760 that boosts up to 1300Mhz, and I think that the huge boost needs some extra energy to achieve.

i love how people say " r9 290 is beating the crap out of the gtx 780", but in linus benchs, the 780 beated the 290 in every test, and both were watercooled.

You could say "there are other benchmarks", well but you are in linustechtips, at least you could give his benchs some credit.

780 sli = 290x cross.

780 ti SLI = 290 TRI crossfire

So im not sure why do people think amd has more powerful cards

They're both 28nm silicon. Apples and apples.

Want to argue properly then lets keep it apples to apples. Just because they are both on the 28nm does not mean they are the  same chip right LOL. Now back to my original point which was more heat more, more power consumption more performance. Take the AMD R9 290x it's a 290watt TDP part and the fastest chip available from AMD. 780ti well that's a 250watt TDP part and it's the fastest, hottest and most power consuming chip from nvidia currently. Case closed More heat, More power consumption, More performance period. Next Gen of AMD and nvidia chips might be more efficient on the power consumption and heat output but mark my words the high end chips will consume more power and run hotter than the lower end chips.

Your "simple dynamics" reply was in response to AMD vs Nvidia TDP in an effort to downplay the 290x's excess heat and a good thing.

Suggesting that hot chips with high TDP are ok because they indicate speed (in this thread under that context) was asinine.

The fact is the Hawaii is less efficient and slower. Trying to spin its bad traits as good wasn't fooling anyone. Next time concede its hot for no good reason other than design, or don't post.

This is about heat and power. The higher the heat and power consumption the better the performance. nvidia/AMD high end chips consume more power and create more heat than nvidia/AMD lower end chips was the point. You are trying to change this into some weird nvidia vs AMD thing. I am just pointing out that for high end performance GPUs the heat generated and power consumed will always be higher than the lower end parts and it's ok as this is an indicator of "Cost/Benefit". Aside from the dollar amount the cost of running a high end GPU is increased heat and power consumption and the benefit is higher performance. Cost/Benefit. To some the benefit is worth more to us than the cost in the form of heat and power consumption.

Yeah i am with Nvidia. Amd doesnt have as good of drivers or the ability to stay lower temperature making nvidia more overclockable

The reality is that a .. "Noob" would not have enough background knowledge on the topic to come to an intelligent conclusion on the subject. They would not understand that you are trying to compare a figurative apple to an orange and that I am comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges.

So of course there is a measurable different in TPD but why is this a problem to some? I mean it's something to take note of and complain about i guess. We all know that Intel is in a different league than AMD in terms of processors and TDP is actually important as most of these CPU's are going into business computers, offices, servers etc where a total energy bill will be noticeably higher if every single CPU uses more power. Then on the other hand we have people shopping for a single video card who are considering one card over another because their energy bill will cost $2 more.

Also, a little example with a GTX 760 and a R9 280, note that here the GTX 760 is OCed (Boost 1100Mhz), but the difference is less than 15 watts. Nvidia cards can draw a lot of power too with their Boost 2.0 feature. My GTX 760 boosts to 1300Mhz, and I'm pretty sure that eats more power than the OCed 280 in this graph.

At the end of the day what are they both? PC's. In my eyes as long as it's not a console except, WII U then its good.

Just buy which has what you want be it price/performance or less heat and power consumption, or even features my AMD's Mantle or Nvidia's Gsync or PhysX.

What you've got to think of is that AMD aim to produce cheaper products on the market and considering this, they still produce amazing stuff. A thing for you to think about is that say AMD weren't around to compete with nvidia prices then nvidia has free reign to overprice thir products to a big amount compared to now and unless we were willing to boycott their products, which you cant if you plan on building a pc with a graphics card, then i wouldn't complain. If you prefer nvidea then switch no-ones stopping you and im just hugely thankful for AMD and I love all their products. (especially thyat r9 295x2, they're not afraid to break trends... Watercooling on a reference card :D.)

 

p.s mantle was huge for BF4 which is one the most popular pc franchises at the moment and youve got to givee it time for more products to include mantle support for the fact thats its still, generally, taking its first steps.

At the end of the day what are they both? PC's. In my eyes as long as it's not a console except, WII U then its good.

But I don't really see the point of ShadowPlay, maybe I'm getting old. If I want to play a PC game, I want the best quality possible with no latency. That's why I'm on a PC. 

 

I'm very happy with the R9 290. Haven't had problems with any games.

Its all fun and games until some noob would thinks a 300w card out performs a 250w card because of "simply dynamics" when in fact it only shows a subpar design on the 28nm process.

 

As power consumption and therefore heat output grows among the two manufacturers' cards the higher performing they are.

 

A 760 consumes less power than a 780, the 780 performs better.

A 280 consumes less power than a 290, the 290 performs better.

 

Performance doesn't come from thin air... in its proper context it can be used as a general indicator of performance.

Still in "Beta" so being that 57 game developers and a few games are already running full Mantle API I would say that excellent. Way more developer support in beta than Physx ever had in the almost decade that it's been around.

No one denys this and I hit upon it myself.

 

It's why I stated earlier that in context (of the initial argument) implying a card's awesomeness via higher TDP is not a wise idea. Excessive TDP when cross checking cards is an indicator of chip efficiency unless (I submit) your only concerned with the exact same architecture.

 

But same architecture wasn't implied when defending of AMD heat vs Nvidia heat.

I would not say that AMD is lacking behind in any way. The 295x2 is beating anything that Nvidia offers at this time, and is cheaper than the Titan Z's.

 

You are saying they are falling behind because they are not offering gimmicky extras like streaming (which you can easily do on Steam).

 

For that purpose I am labeling Nvidia as an example of Apple with the iPhone

 

AMD can be HTC.

 

Just because HTC is not offering a gimmicky watch, does not mean that it is falling behind, or offering worse products.
