Waiting for Skylake?

I agree, but some stuff like CPU's were now it seams like they are coming out once a year with a new die, not really worth the time to ponder about what might be next. When it comes, it comes, then you make the decisions, because who knows, maybe 6 months after Skylake something new might come out.. I will tell you one thing im looking forward to getting and that is Haswell-E and that 5960X, but that comes out in a couple of months, worth the excitement now. :) then when Broadwell-E comes to the market, its time to get happy again, see the pattern :D. One step at a time.

You may not get a Broadwell-E depending on how Intel wants to handle this little snarl of theirs. Broadwell for mobile and Skylake for desktop is a solid possibility.

And frankly there are already Haswell 8-core xeons out there with the same specs or better minus the overclocking capability. I'd have to double-check prices of course, but the X-series chips just seem to be such a waste...

That's fine if you can afford to upgrade that frequently. Some of us are not quite as blessed and have to save our pennies for a while. When those pennies are all saved up we want whatever is going to be the most futureproof (even though nothing really is!). I used to think like you. Went from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge for complete Gen 3 compatibility. But then Haswell came out and I was not impressed. Broadwell is not going to be much of an upgrade either. Needing some kind of platform upgrade to look forward to... DDR4 and PCI-E Gen 4 is better than just a small increase in performance between CPU's and little else. I guess SATA Express and M.2 are kind of exciting too though. I just try to get the most for my money I guess.

That's the reason I said " when it comes, it comes, then make the decision :)" you proved my saying with the first comment and also contradicted yourself in the same sentence, no pun intended bro :)

Also you are correct, but one thing you left out was what a new platform brings to the table, which is " new features" if you are getting a CPU just because of the CPU that is one thing, but if you are looking at all the new features the new platform brings to the table, that is a complete different story, and is a legitimate reason to get exited about Haswell-E coming to the market.

If you think Intel won't launch an 8-core Xeon to go on the X-99 platform based on Haswell's power-efficient architecture, you severely underestimate Intel.

Also, some of the leaked roadmaps suggest that Broadwell is BGA only. That could mean that it is mostly intended for laptops. If that turns out to be the case, mainstreamers will have been stuck on Haswell/Haswell refresh for quite awhile and will be wanting DDR4. Skylake would answer that call in 2015. Forcing mainstreamers to wait until 2016 for DDR4 does not seem like good business for Intel. Maybe if I saved for 3 years I could afford i7-5960X but by that time Cannonlake-E will probably be out! I love to build but have to save for each and every part. It takes me some time.

There's a lot of wild speculation right now, and AMD is not helping the system either. We're gonna be in a CPU dead zone until October at best.

If you're gonna wait for Skylake you might as well wait for Skylake refresh, if you're gonna wait for Skylake refresh you might as well wait for 1151 2.0...

Catch my drift?

Just get a broadwell i7k edition and you won't need to upgrade for another 5 years.

I'm just saying paying the expected $1200 price tag for the 5960x is stupid when we already know 8-core xeons for the Z97 platform have equal or better specs for less money. They will launch on X99 as well. This is inevitable. I'll bet you the prices will be lower too.

People forgot how to read the letters in Intel's roadmaps. They forget which are mobile low, mid, and performance ranges, desktop locked, desktop refresh (unlocked), and OEM chips (usually with a U, R, or S after the enumeration).

Neither Broadwell nor skylake will move to BGA for desktops or board manufacturers would already be up in arms.

Where are you getting SoundBlaster from? I never buy Creative! The ASUS motherboards have the least amount of problems when recording. One of the pages on the link I posted shows this. I also need a MIDI PCI-E card. I chose this sound card at the time based on what was Linux compatible so that I can dual boot.

I see your point, but the one downside to the Xeon chips is that they are not overclockable, which is the upside to i7 K series and Extreme series of chips. When you buy the X58, X79 an or the X99 platforms, you are buying them for the 40 PCI-E lanes and being able to put more then 32GB of memory in your system. The enthusiast platforms are not for everyone and not directed towards everyone either.

argh, sorry, a bit late for me :| Starting to lose it. But the onboard sound should be good enough for recording unless you need to be running multiple in tracks at once.

Although, I think we can all agree the Z platform people get jipped, especially with the PCIe-based storage solutions now coming out. 16 lanes, hell, even 20, is way too few. Hell if you can't run a dual GPU card alongside an M.2 2x at the very least, you have far too few pcie lanes. If Intel would make an X99-platform chip with 4.4 GHz clock rate, it would make X99 worth it for the vast majority of people looking at the 4790k and not being able to jump because of this pcie issue.
