Waiting for Skylake?

I just really don't see the point of haswell refresh or broadwell when SATA express drives are barely even available. Seems wiser to wait for DDR4 and PCI-E 4.0.

Well if your motherboard is 11 years old and the chip on it is the Q6600, the I7 4790k is a beautiful upgrade, especially to not need a discrete GPU in the build. Yeah Skylake will be able to play most games on its own with medium-high settings and no AA, but honestly who actually needs the CPU performance? Also, I suspect skylake will be 6-core chips in the I7 series.

Plus I am suspecting that Skylake will be the first chip to full take advantage of the GTX 800 series ARM chip. Time will tell I guess.

That would be pretty good and would be interesting to see that with Microsoft's DirectX 12 API as well.

From what I read DDR4 is supposed to be way more powerful and requires less power.

Maybe in 5 years. When i first comes out, the timings will be retarded high and the performance about the same as ddr3, that'll get better with the time though. And for most applications, ram is not bottlenecking so i'm not really looking forward to it

intel will have absolutely no competition anymore when skylake will release so expect the prices to be off the chart.

Probably like 400€ for the top of the line i7, (my estimation). Which is like 100€ less than the 4930k and that supports way more stuff :-)

if you consider 400€ a good price, be ready to pay 550€ for it...cause that's what it will cost!

Eh, no. If it takes more than 26 seconds to load Windows 7 from a Samsung 840 Pro SSD (fresh install mind you) and takes 19 seconds to load Tails OS, the chip's defunct.

I'll probably replace my PC with a Skylake one, or maybe even Cannonlake.

hang on and let me get my crystal ball...  I see... I see... a a 10% ICP improvement over Broadwell and further improved iGPU. i see... increased power savings of about 24% at idle and 13% at load and i see ... I see... oh no... oh no no no. so many people complaining their cries for more overclocking head room can be hard all over the forums of the world, its terrible.

Yeah that does seem like the path that Intel has chosen with their chips. But what if they took heed of our cries and allowed us to turn the iGPU off or sold us a chip that doesn't have it?

Cannonlake sounds interesting too but that's even further into the future. I figure by the time I upgrade all my other parts Skylake will be available, maybe even Cannonlake. Coming from Ivy Bridge makes it hard to find a worthwhile upgrade. I just love building though...

I'd also build a PC with every generation, just for the sake of building.

yeah but DDR4 2133 MHZ CL9 = DDR3 2133 MHz CL9 in terms of performance, is about the same freakin thing but it takes a bit less power.

I did hear that at first also but I have been reading otherwise. Right now Corsair has Dominator Platinum DDR3 2133 RAM @ Cas 8. I will see if I can find what I was reading so I can share.

They are saying double the transfer rate and with Intel 8 core and maybe more it just all sounds enticing to me.

Q2 2015 is less than 9 months away

No you must be clearly reading the wrong sources. it'll have support for DDR4 + PCIE Gen 4 which has been pushed back to 2016. Dunno what you're talking about unless you've mistakened broadwell for skylake which is going to be an entirely new socket,

Please become a member of the Linus Tech Tips forum, keep writing smug remarks & let us love you. Peace out.

As far as the release date, I know Broadwell was delayed but Skylake is supposedly still on target. If Broadwell does not do so hot Intel will be itching to release Skylake before Christmas 2015 which is about a year and a half away at worst. My guess is some time after IDF in September 2015. The Skylake platform will not only have DDR4 and PCI-E 4.0 but also improved Wi-Fi & Bluetooth. I'm just trying to find the next Sandy Bridge but it seems like Intel is so worried about it's precious iGPU performance because of the laptop and tablet market. The whole "one type of chip to satisfy everyone" thing is getting tiresome and boring. Most of us do not care about improved iGPU performance. Will they ever show mercy on us and design an Intel desktop CPU that has the leap in performance and overclocking headroom that Sandy Bridge had?
