Need your opinion on something

I'm going to install Xubuntu on my mom's old netbook that she's giving to my sister, for two reasons.

1. It's quick on netbooks.
2. It's fairly sister-proof.

 

My sister has managed to fuck up Windows enough times on her computer where I gave up and put Avast in essentially Beast mode and then made it so she couldn't do anything about it. And she still fucks it up.

 

So, do you guys think this would be the best OS on a netbook that is idiot-proof, or do you guys have something else in mind? If you do, it needs to be 64-bit.

With Xubuntu you can hide a lot of stuff completely, so there's nothing she could do about it.

10 (11 in August). She downloads a bunch of the stupid games and shit that load up browsers with a shit-ton of toolbars and addons. And she insists on using the resource hog known as Chrome, even though Firefox is faster. She got pissed at me when I put Firefox on her Dell, since it was fast at first and then got slowed down. I looked in the addons and there were at least a dozen malicious ones.

I don't know if it's just my experience, but in everything I've used, Chrome has gone fastest on this laptop. Opera and Firefox don't like this laptop, I suppose.

 

Anyway, why not consider Linux Mint? I hear it's the most friendly Linux to use (besides straight Ubuntu)

I don't want it to be friendly. I want it to be a pain in the ass to change settings, just easy to use the web.

Well our sisters sound alot alike she has broke so many computers its not even funny the only difference is shes 26 and is still doing it lol i think that any linux would be fine just because its alot harder to install things on it and alot of things dont work full stop so yea plus its basically ubuntu so it will be the most friendly as u would know.

May as well go Debian or Gentoo, then. Or do LFS (Linux from Scratch) and just make your own to hide like every setting.

Maybe you can use CrunchBang Linux (#!). It is a very lightweight distro (it uses openbox) and runs pretty well. Based on Debian aswell. Just teach her that she can open the web via the super + w shortcut. I am sure you can hide a lot of settings.

But do not block everything, she needs to have the opportunity to learn about Linux.

Use linux, dont tell her the sudo password and it's pretty much sister proof. Dont install gentoo or linux from scratch.

Not sure, They're the ones that come with the shady programs that try to install themselves into all of your browsers in some way, shape, or form.

 

EDIT: Right now the netbook is running Elementary OS .2 (latest stable release) with just Firefox and it is pretty snappy.
