I have a or 2 question about unlocking a phone.

Ok i am trying to unlock my moms old samsung sgh-a877 that she had used on at&t,i am trying to unlock it so i can put her on my plan with walmart family mobile.

 

1,if i remove my sim from current phone so i can try and use it to test and see if the unlock works(i don't want to buy a sim and put it on the plan till it is unlocked),if i unlock it,and the sim works in her phone,would it mess anything up for when i put the sim back i my phone?

 

2,i have been looking and all i see are sites that want to charge me for an unlock code,is there any free way to unlock it with out having to buy an unlock code?
