AdBlock Plus being sued by German Companies

Victorious Secret

That's bizarre man. I just enabled it for a second to test, and it says it blocked one ad (Which would be the banner ad at the bottom).

I think ABP may be reporting ads from another tab or page? Or it's glitched out for some reason. Could be you need to reinstall it? ... I mean... not that it matters lol. Whether it says it blocked 1 or 47, as long as it correctly blocks ads then I guess who cares if the reporting function isn't right?

I'm guessing it is bugged very hard, because now it says 150.

I have no other tabs open and I haven't even left LTT on Chrome. But yea, its blocking what it should be blocking just fine.

Its probably a plugin/browser screw up. I'm just waiting till the weekend so I can nuke this OS and start from scratch, its that time of year again

I've been meaning to do the same thing for a couple months actually. I'm still running Windows 8, and haven't upgraded to 8.1 yet because I have a custom install of 8 (Not really custom, just scripted so that during the install process, the entire user directory - not just the library locations - is installed onto my HDD, where the rest of the OS is installed on an SSD). So rather then do an upgrade, which I'm afraid will just break everything lol, I'd like to do a fresh format and reinstall, but it's a ton of work and I don't get a lot of time off anymore. Soon! Maybe :P

Yea, I hear you. You really need a afternoon set aside for fresh installs, I've been meaning to move my entire Steam library into the 3rd drive, because I really don't want to crush my bandwidth this month for 400GB worth of Steam + Origin + other games.

Hopefully this won't get very far and Adblock can continue and I can continue not watching 1-2 minute ads, having loud popups or annoying videos playing etc etc.

I personally wish add block will always exist, but that's just me

I don't get why Microsoft doesn't give you an option to do that.

I had to change the search path in the registry and then create a new user in order to get my user folder on D:. Just give us an easy way to move it Microsoft!

3. You can block ads with HOSTS file on your PC, so, if ABP loses and has to stop, well, good luck stopping HOSTS file. This is what I did before Firefox and ABP came around.

If they figure out how to beat AdBlock then redirecting with the host file won't work either.

I wouldn't use AdBlock on some sites (whitelist) if it wasn't for the fact they keep showing me fake download buttons and when someone else uses my PC it gets full of crap because of that.

I don't agree with AdBlocking but it's just necessary in some cases.

This, agreed 100%. If they make adblock illegal then they better make intrusive ads also illegal. I'll stop using adblock when sites get rid of clickbait ads,  false ads & intrusive ads.

This is my biggest thing.

Annoying popups, large banners that hover over videos, full screen ads that autoplay; I have just enough patience to sometimes sit through ads on PVR'd content, but on the internet?

GTFO.

I don't really see how that could happen there's only two ways to possibly do it as far as I can tell, 1) make the content providers actually host the ad system themselves, which frankly marking companies will not go for as it basically takes control out of their hands leaving the system prone to tampering. 2) Beating the blacklist by changing the add servers domains/hosting locations, frankly thats not going to work either because its going to be a race of corporate advertising changing domains versus probably millions of people reporting the ad's and it getting pushed to the main blacklist.

If adblock was actually made illegal "big if there" that doesn't mean that the blacklists will go away and you know how the net reacts to people trying to control it, adblock goes down and a few thousand variants crop up overnight, if they go over the blacklist its treading on issues of freedom of speech.

Additional points to think about, ad's take up bandwidth, bandwidth that you've paid for, bandwidth that could be used elsewhere, why should bandwidth that you pay for be used to serve you ad's that you don't want to see? People in bandwidth poor area's such as rural locations or developing nations experience of the net.

on a bit of a tangent, I actually wouldnt mind if networks would release their tv shows as torrents to download if they incorporated ads and made revenue from it or worked out some way to do that. I would certainly sit through a few minutes of commercials watching on my plex server.

The thing is, AdBlock works on the same basis as the host host file.

The host file just redirects the domain (usually to your own computer).

Adblock checks the domain and completely ignores it.

From the website's POV they do the same thing. Both of them ignores fetching the ads.

I doubt that AdBlock will get beaten, and I hope it doesn't. I can think of a few ways of beating it but they are very impractical. What I want are reasonable ads so that AdBlock isn't necessary.

Same here, we have Telus internet Tv, so im basically torrenting shows already.

I rarely skip them. Commercials are well time washroom/food/break moments. Depends on the show. Some shows I will go all hour, others Im okay with having commercials, especially in sports where commercial breaks are a thing anyways. But I like having that level of choice.

On the internet? No such thing. I started using ABP a few months ago and I've already blocked (according to the app) 1.9 million ads. Off one computer.

Thats absurd, that really is.

Sounds good, but ads are designed to make you want the product. I'd rather just not see them.

Bingo. I don't think it's possible with videos. They aren't served by YouTube, but you could block the JavaScript button over the entire thing.

I'd still just rather not see all the ads.

I know thats what I meant, basically adblock but it works on the video overlay ads on youtube and makes google or whoever pays for the ad register that the ad is loaded when it really isn't.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P

Maybe I'll write a JavaScript (get it) tomorrow to do this...

The only ads i care about are pop ups. That's it really.

Oh and the shitty ads on the piratebay, but i guess they take any ads they can get their hands on.

in my opinion Adblock is a necessary evil. You got the evil side that blocks ads and thus disables a legitimate source of income for content creators like Linus. The good side on the other hand is that it prevents you from people who want to earn a quick paycheck by stuffing their site to the brim with popups and other annoying ads. if adblock was not needed i would not use it but as it stands today that is unfortunately not the case

I get that Linus has an agenda because he makes money off AdSense adverts. But that was a really simplistic and biased overview on the WAN show.

The amount of people using adblock usually amounts to about 30% of traffic. But these 30% are the primary target for companies that buy sponsorships and ad integration spots.

Linus would do well to remember that he is also 'double dipping'.

Linus is more than double dipping. He double dips on video ads but he got at least 5 sources of income:

Ads (video and static ads, and the ads on the forum).

Merchandise

Forum memberships

Sponsors

Make commercials for companies.

He is "allegedly" giving special service to rich old men behind Mc Donalds as well but lets not get into that...

For quite awhile now I have not used the ad blocking services out there.  It really isn't much trouble to wait a few seconds before you can fast forward through an ad or every so often watch or look at one ad a little longer.  Still I don't want the experience to become what it is on tv.  There are way too many ads on tv and I just completely mute them now these days.  Do advertisers really want that to happen on the net too with me and others?   In the future keep the adds shorter and happening less often than tv and then I will not have a problem with things.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

I was much more disappointed in his "research" which was basically believing the german companies claims at face value and not actually looking into your post, I feel that he would have changed his mind since the way he does his adds here on the forums, he could easily be white listed.

I love ABP. The only site that I don't use it on is LTT. Everyone else can kiss my electronic ass.

Personally, my way around it is that I use ABP, but I happily donate to the 0.0000005% of websites that I like on the internet that aren't bullshit or porn - I simply haven't gotten around to it on LTT yet, because I'm still not sure whether I like you jackasses or not.
