Sadly it won't matter: if this kinds of threats against net neutrality continue they will eventually be pushed into laws, and then VPN services will be rendered effectively illegal.

 

It's only illegal if you're caught using it. They (LEA's) better have a search warrant when trying to prove it as well. Stupid laws like these will only ensue those that choose to fight 'the system', to fight it even more. This is why the monarchy needs to die. :P

What other form of Government is stuck in the Draconian times? We've been an independent nation for 81 years, without legal dependence for 32 years. We don't have this kind of non-sense being shoved down our throats. If we were still under the monarchy, we probably would have the same issues being forced upon us.

This is really dumb. The opt in should be, you know, manually. As in you have to log into your ISPs site and turn it off and on there, not have it automatically break the services you spent your hard earned money on.

I understand and would apply a very similar logic to torrent sites (it is the users who post copyright infringed material, not the tracker itself) yet they're actively hunted down after broader laws were designed to target them (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) A very similar legislation will be passed if/when net neutrality dies making the use of VPNs nonviable for anybody but power users.

It's not automatic, the article is sensationalist.

 

When installing a new router from one of these large ISPs it asks you the question during install whether you want parental filters or not. It looks like this:

It's pretty trivial to select 'no thanks'. Like I've said in the past, it's just an optional parental control, and as such it's pretty harmless.

Good point, but I would realistically call that only partially opt in. Yes technically the user can opt-in but as someone who's worked on support I can tell you that the vast majority of ISP customers never actually go through that installation process themselves and this is done by an in house technician. 

 

But regardless of that you bring up a good point.
