Question about bits and bytes.

werto165

I know that 8bits = 1 Byte

So is it 1 KiloByte= 1000 Bytes or is it not?

Edit:

So 1KB = 1000B

     1KB =1024B

     1KiB = 1024B

It just all depends on the number system. Generally which one should I use then???

Carefull There. You will have to do the good ol' differentiation between Gigabyte and Gibibytes. :D Look it up

But yeah 1 KB = 1000 Bytes.

who cares...

Oh so is it 2^10, cos it works as base 2. Ahhhh I get it now. So 1024b= 1Kb?

usually 1KB = 1024B, because this way it's just easier to do some calculations, and fits better how the computer works

but sometimes people mean 1KB = 1000B so, when possible, it's better to ask

if asking is not possible, then assume 1KB = 1024B

-snip-

Nope. They are right.

Kilobyte = KB

Kibibyte = KiB

1KB = 1000 Bytes

1KiB = 1024 Bytes

Edit:

Guys.... guys. You are all getting this so wrong.

Windows reads all storage in Kibibytes (don't ask why, it's complicated), but displays all storage as KB which is incorrect. A Kilobyte is 1000 bytes. A Kibibyte is 1024 bytes. It's different.

The "-bibytes" is used to talk about bytes that are 1024^X. The normal Kilo-, Mega-, etc are as they are meant to be. 1000^X representation.

So a Kilobyte is 1000^1, while a Kibibyte is 1024^1. A Megabyte is 1000^2, while a Mebibyte is 1024^2. And so on.

Edit 2:

If you want to know why it's different, it's because RAM manufacturer's measure RAM using 1024^X because... well, that's how computers work. In Bytes. Storage manufacturer's, however use 1000^X for other varying reasons.

When you get a 4TB HDD, you get a 4 Terabyte HDD. However, Windows reads that as Tebibytes (1024^4), and displays it as such, but with TB and not TiB. So it shows up as around 3.6TB even though it's really 4TB. You get all the storage you are supposed to.

However, if you buy a 4GB stick of RAM, you bought a 4 Gibibyte (4 * 1024^3) stick of RAM. That's what it will show up as in Windows because it's really in Gibibytes and is read as Gibibytes, but is shown with the GB and not GiB names/prefixes.

1 kB = 1000 Bytes (metric notation)

1KB = 1024 Bytes (by JEDEC notation) or

1KiB = 1024 Bytes (by IEC notation)

oh, dididn't know that

apparently you're right, but the nonstandard notation for 1KB = 1024B is so [mis]spread, even by microsoft apparently, that my answer still stands: ask when possible, and assume 1KB = 1024B when you can't have more informations

1KB = 1024B and if i remember correctly, the 24 comes in because it is binary s and not decimal which consists of multiples of bits and byte. This is taught in probably the first thing they teach when you are learning to do binary and hexadecimal.

When dealing with computers use 1024. It only differs for storage where manufacturer takes a measurement of 1000 when building and Windows calculates it as 1024 so you never have the exact number of available space as specified on the box because of that difference but you still use 1024 because Windows is using it.
