Crap, i still don't have my android phone, is there any way for me to secure the purchase before the offer runs out?

If you don't have an Android handy or working... Bluestacks is an android app player for Windows & Mac. Plus it is free. http://www.bluestacks.com/

Just sign into your google and amazon accounts.

Shit. Literally brought it three days ago for 5 bucks.

The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.

This is awesome! Just got it on my phone and installed the server on my Debian NAS (took like 30 seconds https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/32852-plex-media-server-debian-repository/ && http://laurendc.net/2014/04/07/set-up-plex-media-server-on-debian-wheezy-7-4/ ) works very well. Never heard of this program before today. Thanks!

Doesn't this give you an old version of plex server? There was something wrong with their repos and by looking at the screenshots in second link it looks like that's an old version as the web UI has changed.

This is how I do this on my Ubuntu server box, get the link from https://plex.tv/downloads and then ssh to server:

wget http://downloads.plexapp.com/plex-media-server/0.9.9.12.504-3e7f93c/plexmediaserver_0.9.9.12.504-3e7f93c_amd64.debsudo dpkg -i plexmediaserver_0.9.9.12.504-3e7f93c_amd64.deb

This is an amazing software solution for organizing and streaming content. Been using it for about a year now. Over 2000 movies and shows indexed and 10000 songs.

Great thing about plex, friends can make free accounts and stream your content as well.

It uses DLNA standards IIRC. So I assume it's secure.

If you can't trust it on your network, you can't trust a PS3 on your network (I think).

I don't trust peasants' boxes on my network ;)

Hm. Locally I'm okay with DNLA. Maybe I'm wrong now, but does DNLA even work over Internet?

That's... not how Plex works.

Basically, you make a Plex account. Then that account links to your server. If you access your account through the Plex website, you can access your server and it will stream the media to you using your internet connection through the internet.

You need good internet for video since it's using your upload. Music and photos should be easy for anyone to do. However, it doesn't use DLNA for that I don't think.

Both I think? I know it's definitely local. Not sure about over the Internet though...

Both, in fact if I gave you access you could stream all of my media to your computer that I give you access to..
