R9 290 vs GTX 780 - Which Would You Personally Pick?

MeesterJackson

Just wondering, which one would you guys take? I personally really like the GTX 780 right now (I don't own one, thinking about purchasing one) so those of you that own a 780 or 290 let me know how you feel about them.

Have you had any issues with one or the other? Personal experiences, thoughts, etc?

PS: GUYS SOMEONE ELSE POINTED THIS OUT. STOP TALKING ABOUT PRICES. THAT'S NOT THE POINT OF THIS DISCUSSION.

290 because it is whole 300$ cheaper(in my region) and all the extra benefits of 780 do not justify paying 300$ more over a 290.

R9 290 if it's not reference and you don't need those "Nvidia exclusive features".

R9 290, but not the reference model. It's cheaper than the 780, it has 1GB more memory, which does help a lot, even at 1080p these days, and the performance is pretty much the same between these two cards.

R9 290. Super cheap, great when OC'd, and I don't use any of Nvidia's features.

FreeSync and Mantle both appeal to me.

India ~ 290 goes for 40-42K while 780 is 55-58K.

58K being close to 1000$ :|

Only considering good aftermarket GPU.

As long as you get a custom cooler, 290 all the way. Much better at higher resolutions.

I have an R9 290, so yeah... ;) It's usually cheaper and faster with most games at higher than 1080p resolutions.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

290

If I remember correctly, if I want to run PhysX on AMD I have to run it off my CPU right? To do that I just need to go to Nvidia's website and download the latest PhysX drivers correct?

Definitely the R9 290, unless money isn't a concern in which case I would pick the 780.

290. It's cheap and it kicks ass. As for the whole Physx thing, my 4770k more more than enough extra power to run the calculations on the CPU (come on guys, this isn't 2007 anymore  ;))

I will always go with the Nvidia option.  In this case if I could not find a GTX 780 in the same price range or cheaper than the R9 290 then I would go with the next cheapest Nvidia card.  I want meh physX.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

physx is nvidia gpu ONLY so it can't be run off the cpu. but honestly phyx isn't worth it in my opinion

I would pick R9 290 for two reasons, one being that they will be cheap on ebay, two is that I can (hopefully) mine with it to make some the money of it back

You can get PhysX with AMD. Just run it off your CPU.

Why?

It seems more games are optimised/designed for Nvidia cards, and in general they run cooler and consume less power. I also prefer the Nvidia technologies like G-sync and Advanced PhysX. But the 290 and the 780 are in different price ranges so I don't really see the point in comparing them unless money isn't a concern.
