New i7 4790K won't boot on z87

Go to solution Solved by Nuytens,

I've just been having the same problem but managed to figure it out.

When you did the BIOS update did you run the application in the zip folder or did you just load the .CAP file in the BIOS? Usually I update the BIOS using EZ Flash 2 in the UEFI BIOS but it seems like you need to actually run the application in Windows in order for the new CPUs to work.

Hope this helps :)

no i only updated it in the bios with the EZ flash utility, but i have been running this bios for more then a week now and when i go into ai suite it says that i have version 2004 so.

But i'm gonna try this and see if it helps thx for the tip there m8 :D

welcome to the Linus Tech Tips forums!

this is correct. it allows the mobo firmware to be updated to accept refresh/devils canyon.

i believe the OP only has half the operation done.

Yeah i think it also let's see what it does now :P

I'll tell you guys the specs of pc firs.

Mobo: Asus Z87-c

CPU: i7 4790K  ( had an i5 4670K)

PSU: Corsair CX600m

GPU:MSI gtx 770

RAM: 2x 8 GB corsair vengeance

Ok so i installed my new cpu with a new h100i also, when i try to boot i get black screen, the pc doesn't power down and keeps running so it's not running hot.

The red cpu error LED is burning so there is a problem somewhere.

I have the newest bios installed for a week without problems with my former cpu.

It's version 2004 so devils canyon is supported.

I tried doing clear cmos but that didn't help.

Any of you guys maybe know something i can try to get the beast awake? :D

Thx in advance

wait what, the Cpu needs power......xD

yeah apparently something new from intel you know them showoffs :D

Reseat CPU, take a look if it's clean in the down side where the LGA is

Back in the days CPUs didn't use dedicated power connector :P, were "feeded" directly from AT/ATX 20 pin connector like PCI cards

when i switched it back with my i5 i found a small stain of thermal paste on the i7 so maybe that's the problem gonna try it again tomorrow with new thermal paste and new bios flash and let's see what happens :D

although you have the BIOS 2004, did you also use the updating tool provided to install the BIOS?

It's "out" as in it exists. lol

Some people who work for PC stores or know people who do sometimes gets the parts first. I mean, it's only four days until the public release.
