Gaming From the Living Room?

aikoels

So basically I am planning to set up so that I can game on my gaming computer from my living room on the TV.

I plan to route a hdmi cable that is about 35-50 feet through the walls along with two usb extension cables.

In the living room I will have a keyboard and a mouse which will plug into the usbs, with the hdmi going to the TV.

I understand that this sounds insane, when I first thought of this as the way to do it I laughed it off, but I thought about it more and I can't think of a better option.

Point of the post: Will this setup work, and is there a better way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

There should be no issue with this. I do it myself. Even have a USB hub to plug a ton of controllers in, hacked Mario Kart 64 with 8 people on one 50" 4k screen is fun (buddy has that massive 55" Sony TV). We also do other things, like with a Wii Emulator and such, we'll play turn-based games and drink a bit, etc. Living room gaming is alive and well in my book, and a step up from console if you do it right.

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

A 35 ft HDMI cable? Won't that increase lag?! I'd say wait until game stream becomes streamlined enough to run on a semi-good internet connection. And I don't wanna start a flame war here, but isn't that what consoles are for?

It won't be much slower at all. It'd be much faster than (almost) any wireless connection, and not suck up bandwidth. As for consoles being for that; Yes, I agree. They're catered to the couch potato, and they serve their purpose very well, but some people just want to go a bit further than the limits of what consoles can provide.

About the console thing, my main issue is that I want to play sims 3 and skyrim with all of my mods, neither of which any console can do for me.

General note:

Thanks so much for the replies, I was worried about any lag and things like that and it seems that you guys were able to settle my worries, thanks.

It does actually work with most games if you go through the process of adding non-steam games to steam.

Various standard desktop programs work this way if you add them as well as long as they support some sort of full screen or maximised mode.

It's rare, but people still do it. You can be one of them.

I use a 15M / 50 foot HDMI cable to watch movies and play games using a xbox control, i was playing portal 2 and grid 2 few hours ago.. it works fine no lag.

Try not to buy the cheapest cable out there or go crazy spending to much i spent 15.00 GBP / 25.00 USD from amazon mine works fine just don't go over 50foot as i have heard people start having problems.

Whoa whoa whoa an HDMI cable 35 feet long?! I would record moving your PC closer to your TV or streaming it to another PC

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

35+ foot hdmi cables aren't underheard of, and from what I have seen don't have any real issues. The main reason it is so long is that it will be routed through the walls so that it is not seen. Moving my PC isn't an option because that would involve carrying my large PC up and down stairs every time I want to go on the couch to play :/

I have had a gaming media center pc since 2002 but it has its limits. Its fun for fps and racing games but I play alot of MMO's and MOBA's and even with a 50" tv I still get eye strain with the lack of visual clarity compared to sitting a foot away from a 27" monitor. Not to mention for the ergonomics have balancing a keyboard in your lap and mouse on an armrest just arent that great for 4+ hours of gaming. I hope roccat does bring the SOVA to market, maybe that will help. Plus i use a bluetooth mini keyboard because RF is terrible and needs to die a cruel death, and I quickly miss my mechanical keyboard and wrist rest. Basically if i cant play it with the 360 controller, the experience is just okay.

PS: I still play the heck out of NFSMW (the original) with the 360 controller. There's a reason why NFSMW is the most expensive used NFS game at gamestop.

Yea basically, except a bit more improvised, I have a shelf that I will use on my lap, a wired keyboard and mouse hooking to usb extension cables, stuff like that.
