HP's new storage technologie can lead to 100TB phones

wtfxmitchell

''It looks like servers are its initial target, but HP is also working on an Android version that it says could lead to smartphones with 100TB of storage.''

"Today, all our devices -- from phone to supercomputer -- constantly shuttle information between three layers of memory: what's needed this instant (SRAM), what will be needed very soon (DRAM) and what may be needed later (storage), Memristors will be fast, dense and cheap enough to play both the 'soon' and 'later' roles at once, and thereby speed up throughput by eliminating most of the to and fro,"

Be optimistic :D But sadly what you're saying is most likely true.

Phone battery still dies super fast and we won't see 100TB in the next 10 years so what's your useless comment trying to do? Or is it some kind of humor I don't see?

Just consider this: Apple makes you pay 110$ for an extra 16gb of storage on their phone. How much do you think 100tb would cost you? (I know others offer more capacity for a much lower price but still 100tb is a big jump...)

With the Move to cloud Storage & faster, cheaper internet connections, Would you need 100TB on your phone? I have 32GB of which most isn't used thanks to Emit.

I bet people in the 70's never could have imagined we'd have the processing power we'd have today. Or the amount of storage. Or solid-state drives.

Yes, this won't come for a long time. But if it does come, we'll have a lot more storage (which is good).

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei

everyone here is missing the point.

they say that their storage is as fast as dram. meaning you wouldn t need any dram in a pc and just use your computer like everything is on a ramdisk.... and you get a ton of capacity.

also they didn t say that every phone will use 100tb storage, only that they could do it.

it s not because 2tb 2.5" hdd exist that they re in every notebook ever, you can have 160gb drives too.

i guess i m the only one who want that to happen...

Anything I write is just a comment, take is as such, there is no guarantees associated with anything I say.

When all those phone screens have 16K screens because they obviously "need it" (read: just screwing the battery life for specs that don't matter), you may need more storage for every video you make etc. :P

Sure, if the storage was the way it is now. But if we have a new technology that allows us to manufacture storage for 100TB for the same price as 16GB now, it's not unreasonable for it to be the same price or less.

Current storage technology could lead to phones with at least 128 if not 256gb of storage already, yet mobile makers don't seem to be interested in implementing any technology that isn't just higher resolution apparently they will wait until Apple comes with the equivalent of "retina" for storage (My guess is that they will call it something pretentious like "Memoriam") for them to actually give a fuck about storage.

Considering how what now compares to small amounts of storage was a big deal even 10 years ago, I can't see why this is so hard to believe.

By the time such huge storage will be possible in phones, prices for it will go down. A 16 TB phone will cost the same, if not less, since electronics are only getting cheaper.

We will never get 100TB phones. Cloud storage will be too mainstream before 100TB devices are even possible.

for some reason since iPhone 1 the price of 16gb extra storage has remained the same :P and the post implies that 100tb phones should be just around the corner...
