Considering the 280 is a 7950 and the 280x is a 7970 GHz if you can get the 280 cheaper and overclock it then its on par.

I agree with @Tactius. But since it's a AMD card can you always overcklock it to reach those desired frames you want:D

Jokes aside, if you know what you're doing with oc you can get pretty close to if not better performance than a 7970 on a 7950, but if you get a bad chip you won't reach anywhere close. Since the price difference is not so high a 7970 is worth it imo.
