A law in California: Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043), which goes into Effect in January 2027 brings up some concerns.

What will happen when it goes into effect? Looking online: everything keep saying Windows 11 will require us to have a webcam plugged in at all times and the surveillance software broadcasting API's to servers own by who knows what sent to only god knows where, the surveillance being built into the kernel or something like that. Where you have to scan your government ID just to use the command prompt or use basic features on the operating system.

Is this just BS? or is there a kernel of truth I'm missing? (please correct me if I'm wrong)

Didn't they do the same with Linux, with the thing not doing much?

California just requires a Age identifier, New York I think is the only one requiring actual verification and it should be a one time thing for the OS.
I can't think of any reason you would need a webcam constantly monitoring you, if windows decides to do something like that then that's just entirely on Microsoft. Given how well that went with their Xbox using the kinect, I just don't see it happening.

This honestly just sounds like fear mongering.

"A law in California" = California being California. It's a nothing burger and they can continue to who they are. You should see the water fixtures in my house; I removed all the California required restrictor garbage. (cali can kiss my dairy-air).

Laws in California have a habit of becoming de facto laws across the US. For example California has "Higher" emission standards, therefor many auto manufactures will just use California compliant emission systems in their cars. Because this is at the OS level many are rightfully concerned this will effect everyone in the US, regardless of what state your in. Of course, its possible Microsoft, Apple and potentially Linux based companies who operate in California could attempt to just enforce it there. This was the case with California's Net Neutrality law.

If your concerned, swtich to Linux. No way California can force Linux in to submission. Most Linux distros are not developed in their borders, hell Im sure a lot of devs are outside the US as a whole. Not to mention there is always time for this to be brought up in Federal Court. Considering the Federal Courts have thrown out the tariffs. The Supreme Court just pretty much destroyed the DMCA, because now ISP's dont have to lift a finger to stop piracy.

At the end of the day you need to wait to see how this is going to be implemented. No one has answers, I think if anything many of these companies are trying to figure out what they are going to do. I feel the worse that will happen is you will have to have an account (Microsoft, Apple, etc). You will likely have to verify your age the same way Discord is doing it.

Piece of advice my friend told me once that is actually good advice. Focus on your controllables. Dont worry about shit you cant control. It will just stress you out. Last I read you were working on getting a work permit and moving to Canada. I would focus on that.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Fearmongering for clicks. Anyone who makes the claim that they’ll be watching you through your webcam as an age verification measure is an untrustworthy source and you should cut them out of your information streams.

The computer is where personal documents, data, and your equivalent of a journal exists storing files and spreadsheets. And it would take a judicial warrant to search a computer under normal legal circumstances.

It needs to be challenged and repealed under violating the 4th amendment:

'Fourth Amendment:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.'

California is usually the first domino to fall before some law happens to take into effect everywhere like you said. Why do you think Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a thing now? Diesel Exhaust Fluid was first introduced in California in December of 2008 and it became federal regulation in 2010.

I HATE CALIFORNIA! THEY RUIN EVERYTHING FOR EVERYONE ELSE! They nerf our trucks, they make our bathrooms worse, regulate and tax everything to death, and cannot admit that their state is overpopulated (Population: 39.5 million [2025], close to the entire population of Canada).

But they are not searching your computer. They are asking for your age/ID. Which retailers already do if you buy restricted items. Also, the internet is a public place for the most part. Guess what? If you walk down the street, do you think you have a right to privacy? NO you dont.

No where in these laws have I seen they can search your stuff without a warrant. Plus if the government wanted to do that all they have to do is declare "National Security". Again your reading too far in to this. Its too early to tell how the domino's are going to fall. Fact is Texas has had age verification laws for a while now, and it has not once effected me here in Michigan.

Stop reading in to this stuff. Control the controllables.

In this case it was Texas. Also their Net Neutrality law didnt really make it self national and that has been effect for quite a while.

BAWAHAHAHA!!!! 😅

I'll sum it up thusly, the current U.S. administration is obsessed with collecting data on private citizens via any means possible.

This is yet another avenue they are trying.

Funny you should say that. Its an election year. The current governor I dont think can run again. Based on the current candidates, California might be having a shake up in leadership.

That being said, Im glad I live in Michigan. California, Texas, New York and Florida are the 4 states I would never live in, EVER. I consider them to 4 most fucked up states in the union.

Not really without getting political. Though in the case of Florida, you can look up Florida Man.

what is funny about the states you despise is they are also the states that help support Michigan as they are literally the four largest contributors to federal money in the U.S., with California easily being the highest contributor in the nation; $276 billion to the federal coffers for 2024 as opposed to the $32 billion PAID to Michigan out of federal coffers.

https://usafacts.org/articles/which-states-contribute-the-most-and-least-to-federal-revenue/

You guys can hate on CA. all you want, but it is the 4th largest GLOBAL economy with a GDP of over $4 trillion.

Guess instead of Canada becoming the 51st state, the west coast and upper East coast could secede from the country and become Canadian provinces.

then watch the U.S. economy take a real nosedive.

Its more than the economy. Look at what some of these states are doing. Texas was the first I believe with age verification laws. They also want to add controversial curriculum in to their schools. Lets be real here. The only real thing Texas has is oil. Guess what? US refineries cant even process it. SO.... we cant even use our own oil.

California has a housing crisis of mega proportions. You shouldn't have a job and be living in your fucking car, thats a real possibility out there. Ever wonder why everyone is leaving the state?

Same applies to New York, specifically NYC. Its super unaffordable. You shouldn't need multiple room mates to make it. OR have to live in an apartment thats the size of a card board box.

Florida Man......

Honestly the problem with the states i list is this. Either they lean too far right or too far left. That leads to issues. Which is why I would never live in any of those states. Outside of Texas which Id like to see the Johnson Space Center, I would never visit any of them either.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

uhhh, ok

I was just talking about the economics, not social issues as that would venture to far into politics.

sorry if it struck a nerve.
