Do I need a new CPU...?

Go to solution Solved by Somerandomtechyboi,

drop in a 5700x3d and done

psu will have no issues running it as these dont exactly draw much power just that the board will need a bios update to run the 5700x3d

Hey guys,

I have a PC that's been upgraded piece by piece through time and in its current stat it's good for 90% of things I do on it, but in some applications it's getting kind of sluggish and I wanted your two cents if I need a new CPU.
My specs are:
MBO: Gigabyte Aorus Elite B450
CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

RAM: 32BG G.SKILL (F4-3200C16D-32GIS) (running at 2933Mhz because of CPU limitation)

GPU: RTX 3060 12GB

PSU: Corsair CX550M

If I was to upgrade my CPU I would like a 8 core part, 5th gen, but I would also like my PSU to be able to supply it :)

TY!

If u plan on upgrading the cpu i would just also upgrade the mainboard aswell and go for current gen might cost more now but u wont need a upgrade for another 4/5 years i think

The current-gen would also need new ram.  If you're talking about going b450 to b550 (or x570) I wouldn't do that just for a CPU upgrade.

Depending on your budget get a 5700X or 5700X3D as drop in upgrade for $150-200

Else upgrade the whole platform with Zen4-B650-DDR5 RAM, but it's at least $400 (with a 7600)

Do you have an SSD as the OS drive?

5700x3d and well what cooler do you have? Stock cooler wont do for it but plenty options at 40$ or less.

Psu is fine these chips are very efficient

But what do you mean with sluggish? If its just windows well is it on a ssd and if it is how old is the install?

A full fresh install every 3 years is still recommended to keep windows running non shittily

Thank you sir, I just might do exactly that!
As for my bios, i already updated it when i purchased new RAM in order to unlock higher speeds.

I am really currently not in a position to change the whole platform, I recently purchased DDR4 RAM, but thank you for your suggestion.

I have an aftermarket cooler, but I cannot remember which one, it's been a while since i got it.

Sluggish in the sense of sometimes it takes it a second just to open file explorer, and my diablo4 sometimes stutters a bit (only when im speeding on a horse and lots of new content needs to be loaded in a short amount of time).

As for the new install every 3 years, I did not know that. Seems like a lot of work, Ill have to think about it.
