What would you think, performance wise, am I leaving on the table with this setup?

ASUS Rog Crosshair VIII Hero (wifi) X570
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, 16-Core  4850 MHz (48.5 x 100)
4 x G-Skill Trident Z Royal F4-4000C18-16GTRS (64gb total) (default timing set to 1900MHZ (3800MHZ)
GigaByte RTX 4070ti

Looks good to me.

You would get more FPS with a 5800X3D over the 5950X but that doesn't make the 5950X a bad gaming CPU.

It looks to be a well balanced system. I think the only concern is if it's been stable with that memory.

 

Other than that, be sure you're running at least PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives; specifically one in the first M.2 that connects lanes direct to the CPU. The the M.2 slot through the X570 chipset will work too, but it's shared bandwidth.

all the timing and tightening of stuff confuses and frightens me - i just threw money at it till it looked pretty and worked nicely 3800mhz is the best I could get without monkeying with the timings.

 

next upgrade is a few years out and will probably be whatever AMD comes out with after the AM5 series - so Im looking to squeeze as much out as i can

If this is a new build, then I highly recommend running Memtest86 for at least 12 hours with as many passes as you can. Just crank the pass count up so you can at least run it that long. Don't worry if you can't finish them all. What's important is that of the passes that it completed or is working on doesn't throw any errors. You'll know if you have any.

Don't ignore memory errors. At best that can crash a game, general apps, or the OS. But the worst is when data in flight gets corrupted and written back to the disk. You might not know how badly your files on disk have been corrupted until it's too late.

Biggest issue you will have is RAM instability. 4000 mhz ram Rarely ever works well on AM4 or On DDR4 Intel Cpus. If you experience any instability, drop it down to 3600 mhz and see if its more stable.
