Anyone interested in a RETRO LAN Party?

We recently held a retro LAN party in Northern California. I'd like to do another one this Spring.

Would be awesome if LTT included a retro section for their next LAN or did a specific retro LAN event. Let me know if anyone is in the Sacramento area and wants to join our next one. The only requirement we ask (for strangers) is that you bring your own retro computer.

Here is a clip from the retro LAN party we held this past October:

I used to host Diablo 2 parties; It was such a great time!  I wish i had friends... good lord I used to be so much more fun...

What game are you planning on doing? AOE is always a great game when you have people in the same room: put 5 humans against one "max difficulty" bot civilization and it's a great comradery builder.

It must be true, I read it on the internet...

Awesome! Diablo II is still one of my all time favorite games. I was just playing the remastered version last night in fact. We played StarCraft, Duke Nukem, some Doom. Next party we will definitely be playing Counter Strike and DII.

I’m down

I would just have to find the graphics drivers for the integrated graphics for the hardware that I can’t identify because I don’t have drivers installed. *sobs in drivers that didn’t work*

I wish there was a LAN party event in the UK where we'd play games like UT GOTY (Game of the Year edition), UT2004 and UT3 (as I loved the Unreal Tournament series games back in the 2000s). I really missed those games. Counter strike was a another good game series as well. Who else likes Unreal Tournament games and Counter strike?

Radeon 9800 Pro

Yup, I had one of those!!

I wish I still had my original OG LAN party rig! This was well before the days of tempered glass side panels and RGB: it was a beige Pentium mini tower, complete with Duck Tape handles 🙂

Spec:

  • Pentium 166MMX overclocked to 250Mhz
  • 32Mb PC100 SDRAM
  • Depending on the LAN party, I'd either take my "daily" Eizo 21" or a Belinea 17" CRT.
  • Tseng ET6000 2.25Mb 2D card
  • 2x Voodoo2 12Mb cards in SLI

..... not that those Voodoo cards made any difference for DukeNukem"3D", but HalfLife/Counterstrike/Quake3Arena were all AMAZING!

I think the most retro rigs I still have that might work are either my:

  • Core2Quad C2QX6850 with 8Gb DDR2, Crucial Vertex2 60Gb SSD and a HD4870
  • Opteron165: currently undervolted and OC'd to 2.25Ghz... not sure it'll still OC up to 2.7Ghz that I had it running for gaming. 2Gb DDR OCZ 500Mhz and a 2x 36Gb WD Raptor RAID0 and a HD3870 512Mb.

The PSU for those rigs is still running about 4h-8h a day (in my son's 5800X3D gaming rig).... PC Power and Cooling 610W "Silencer".

Main rig: Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX3080Ti FE, 32Gb Teamgroup Create-T DDR5-6000C30, AC Freezer3 280mm AIO, Asrock Steel Legend X670E, M.2 2Tb Samsung 990 Pro, M.2 1Tb WDSN550, SATA 8Tb WD80EFAX, Corsair HX850, LianLi O11 Air Mini + 3x NF-A14's, MSI MPG 271QRX (27"/1440P/360Hz), Gigabyte M27Q (27"/1440P/170Hz), Asus PA248 (24"/1200P/60Hz), G815 kbd, G Pro X Superlight 2, Audezee Maxwell.

Games room "TV rig": 5800X3D, AC Freezer2 280mm AIO, ASUS Prime B450M, RTX4080S w/iChill AIO, 32Gb TridentZ DDR4-3600C14, M.2 500Gb & 1Tb WDSN550, 8Tb WD80EFAX, BeQuiet Straight 1000W,  LianLi O11 Air Mini, LG G4 (55"/4K/120Hz), G815 kbd, G502 mouse, LG G1 Soundbar / Audezee Maxwell.

Lounge HTPC: Minisforum UM760 Slim, Ryzen 5 7640HS, 16Gb DDR5, 1Tb M.2, LG C2 (42"/4K/120Hz), generic wireless remote/mouse.

NAS: Synology 1812+, 3Gb RAM, 3x16Tb Seagate EXOS RAID5, 1Tb MX500 cache, 3x3Tb WDRED RAID6, 120Gb SSD cache.

In terms of grading, this falls well short of being properly "retro", you get some points for the non-modular power supply, but you're losing a TON for the sleeved cabling, RGB and glass side panel....

If this ever happens in London, I'm going beige, full size tower, ketchup and mustard power cables, grey IDE ribbons, SCSI DVD-ROM and CD-RW, floppy drive, Creative Labs AWE32, the whole works.... maybe even one of those 5.25" bay IO panels for serial ports and USB (USB1 only, of course!).

I’d also love to see more LAN parties happening in Ontario! Traveling to BC or the US for events is a bit tough. There used to be some great ones in Brantford, but those groups seem to have disappeared. More local events would be awesome! Just to clarify, I’m talking about Ontario, Canada, not Ontario, California.

Given the population of Ontario/Quebec (the GTA has more people than BC), it seems silly not to have it here and have it be financially sustainable.

I went to one in the GTA like 20 years ago that was in an old garage/workshop and it was so much fun.

And I suspect if you have them in other places, some of the people will love it so much they come to the mothership Whale LAN at Smash Champs at some point.

I think the business of physical events in real life are important to any business that thrives upon community, and I think it would be a net benefit to LMG to get a real events business working, but not limit themselves to Vancouver which is a small and expensive market.

I used to play star craft with some friends when I went to college in my dorm room. With those crappy early 2000s laptops and my linksys wireless router. I played on a iBook G3 clam shell indigo. I thought I was so cool because my laptop had a handle lol.

Wish LTX was still a thing.
