Best GPU for Folding @ Home?

Whats the best GPU for folding @ home? Also wanting it to be power efficient so would a 750/Ti be fine?

@AMD Lover For Nvidia cards, in order to meet the points requirement for EVGA bucks for example, one would need a GTX 770 (to run almost the whole month) or above. A lot of people have dual to quad 780 Ti and Titan rigs that net a lot of points.

 

GPUs aren't really that great for folding, you'll see a lot of dual-socket X58 boards with Westmere Xeons (those things are champs). Quad socket Opterons are also pretty nice; think of it as helping AMD by buying a product that isn't popular in the server space. They also net a lot of points.

GPUs aren't really that great for folding, you'll see a lot of dual-socket X58 boards with Westmere Xeons (those things are champs). Quad socket Opterons are also pretty nice; think of it as helping AMD by buying a product that isn't popular in the server space. They also net a lot of points.

 

Just an FYI to check some facts before posting... the BigAdv project has changed recently in anticipation of its cancellation. So, you now require 24 cores minimum. Almost all dual socket boards will fail Folding. Now about your only option are higher end 6000 Opteron solutions, but even that is now a waste considering the whole BA project ends in December/January.

For performance versus power efficiency, high end NVidia still rule with the new GPU Boost 2.0 and they run much cooler and quieter than comparable AMD cards. I just remember high end kepler cards getting slammed by the new Nvidia drivers and everyone was staying on 310 or earlier to avoid getting their PPD neutered.

My GTX 660 is still performing great with F@H though I would like a more powerful card, I've seen a very well priced GTX 770 but I don't think it would run with my Core i3 very well but very soon I'm hoping to get a new CPU

It still does have a lot of potential, infact if they could run the same work units, 3 of them can perform on par with a GTX 780 ti and use less power. Unfortunately there's a bug when Maxwell GPU's try to fold Core 17 work units and it causes all of them to fail. Last I heard, there was an update in the works to address this, but as of now they are still restricted to core 15 work units. The reason this is an issue is Core 17 has quick return bonuses that multiply your points depending on how fast you finish work units, Core 15 for the most part does not. Basically you get less points for the same if not more intensive work.

They've done wonders on core 17 for Kepler in just the past two months; my GT 640 was restricted to core 15 projects because it couldn't ever download core 17 projects and would idle at download causing massive lag in my system.

@Me1z covered the issue with the 750's - be nice once they get that all sorted out. 

 

The issue NVidia drivers also exists with AMD from time to time - it is the luck of the draw. 9 time out of 10 a driver upgrade is fine, but sometimes it isn't. GPU drivers seem to be something people just upgrade to the latest willy nilly even though the upgrade may do nothing for them. Even when it does... oh, 2 FPS more in X game. I prefer, if it ain't broke, I am not fixing it and only upgrade any GPU driver if there is a significant reason. The recent AMD for instance for the updated OpenCL has allowed for a bit of a boost on FAH which is nice.

big advanced projects are big intricate cpu specific projects for machines with lots of cores, but the requirement to do them has been increased and the project is going to end dec/jan. Most likely it doesn't mean much to you, but it certainly does mean something for tabascosauz up there that was giving you false information.

 

gpu's were appealing/competitive even before the recent changes were made to bigadv projects, bigadv wasn't the be all and end all of everything, saying "gpu's aren't good for folding" is an exaggeration, gpu's are incredibly good at churning through the projects that can be optimized for them.
